ZOOT FEST 2013

ZOOT FEST AT EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY WILL BE HELD ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1OTH TO HONOR ZOOT SIMS AND AL COHN
FOR THE BENEFIT OF JAZZ EDUCATION AND PRESERVATION.

An amazing group of world renowned musicians are excited to be a playing together to help keep the jazz alive at East Stroudsburg University, by helping to raise money for the Al Cohn Memorial Collection. The day will feature: Walt Bibinger, Joe Cohn, Bill Crow, Jim Daniels, Jerry Dodgion, Bob Dorough, Marion Evans, Bill Goodwin, Tony Marino, Ed Laub, Dave Liebman, Joe Locke, Joe Lovano, Bucky Pizzarelli, Lew Tabackin, Phil Woods and the COTA Festival Orchestra and more to be announced…

The third edition of Zoot Fest will be held in the Keystone Room at East Stroudsburg University on Sunday November 10th from noon until 6PM. This afternoon of memories and music will again honor the great partnership of Zoot Sims and Al Cohn and will be a major fund raising event for ESU's Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection housed at the Kemp Library at East Stroudsburg University and community outreach partner, COTA Camp Jazz.

Opening Remarks by ESU President Marcia Welsh will be followed by a musical greeting and tribute to Zoot and Al from Bucky Pizzarelli, Ed Laub and Walt Bibinger.

A panel discussion moderated by Bill Goodwin, Culled from the Herd – Woody Herman's Sphere of Influence is next. Joining the panel will be ex-Woody Herman band mates Joe Lovano and Jim Daniels and other special guests to speak of not only the Thundering Herd but also the flavor of that era of big band jazz.

After a break for Complimentary Lunch and Beverages there will be a workshop discussion and performance (sight reading!) of music for saxes and rhythm composed and arranged by Al Cohn in the tradition of Woody's Second Herd. Another Four Others will feature Lew Tabackin, Joe Lovano, Adam Niewood – tenors, Jay Rattman – Bari, Skip Wilkins – piano, Evan Gregor – bass, Tom Whaley – drums. They will be joined by the COTA Cats Junior Zoots from the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts educational program.

A Jam Session α lα Zoot will follow, hosted once again by Bill Goodwin. Old friends and special guests Woods, Cohn, Crow, Liebman, Dorough and others will perform in the time honored style of Zoot and Al.

Next, Vibraphonist Joe Locke and his Group will perform music that reflects on an era when the music was part of the social fabric – harking back to the Terry Gibbs days with Woody, Zoot and Al. Widely considered to be one of the major voices of his instrument, Joe is long known to be a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range.

The afternoon will conclude with Library Alive – music from the Al Cohn Memorial Collection – a unique repository of swing personified - performed by the Grammy nominated Phil Woods and the COTA Festival Orchestra - fresh on the heels of the release of their new CD "New Celebration".

Seating in the Keystone Room is limited and advance purchase is strongly recommended. The $50 per person admission fee includes the program plus a lunch buffet with drinks, dessert and other refreshments. A $25 ticket for students with ID will include lunch, soft drinks and special seating.

Dedicated to preserving all forms of jazz from all eras, The Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection (ACMJC) was founded in 1988 to honor the life and legacy of Al Cohn – legendary saxophonist, arranger, composer and conductor, and long-time Pocono resident. This collection includes the Zoot Sims Collection donated by his wife Louise. The collection is housed in the Kemp library on the ESU campus and consists of jazz recordings, oral histories, sheet music and arrangements, photographs, books, videos, and original art and memorabilia, all generously donated over the years by supporters from around the world. Its official jazz magazine, The Note, is published twice a year and distributed to a world-wide readership. For more information about the ACMJC, visit www.esu.edu/alcohncollection
