Jazz musician Billy Cobham to perform in Taos

World renowned jazz drummer Billy Cobham and his Spectrum 40 Band featuring Dean Brown, Gary Husband and Ric Fierabracci will bring to Taos their unique blend of jazz, blues and rock music Sept. 29 for a 7 p.m. show at the Taos Community Auditorium, according to a press release from Griffin and Associates.

A private reception will follow.

"I am very excited to finally be coming to Taos to perform, " Cobham said in a statement. "It's been one of the special places on the top of my bucket list for a long time."

Cobham was co-founder of the 1970s jazz-rock infused Mahavishnu Orchestra, along with guitarist John McLaughlin, before branching out on his own to form his band Spectrum. Cobham and his band played with the Grateful Dead and Jack Bruce, as well as the "Saturday Night Live" Band in the 1980s. After touring internationally following the release of three LPs, he played at Peter Gabriel's 1992 WOMAD Festival, later forming a more acoustic-oriented quartet called Nordic in 1996.

In 2001, Rhino Records released a retrospective of Cobham's work called "Rudiments: The Billy Cobham Anthology." Cobham has since continued touring the country with his Spectrum 40 Band.

Throughout his career, Cobham has played with many jazz legends including George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Ron Carter and Grover Washington, Jr., to name a few.

Allmusic.com describes Cobham as "a technically accomplished soloist whose combination of bombastic power and rhythmic clarity made him the quintessential fusion drummer."
