| Maverick Concerts: Classical Indian Music, Aug. 17 Maverick Concerts, the oldest continuous summer chamber music festival in America, announces an evening of classical Indian music this Saturday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 pm. Bansuri flutist Steve Gorn, who has drawn sell-out audiences at Maverick in past years, will be joined by Sanjoy Bandopadhyay, sitar, and Samir Chatterjee, tabla. Steve Gorn Steeped in the essence of classical Indian tradition, Steve brings to this music a contemporary world-music sensibility. He took his first steps on this path as a young jazz musician studying composition at Penn State. Steve has brought his elegant bamboo bansuri sound to American pop music, influencing a wide range of musicians and recording with Paul Simon, Richie Havens, Paul Winter, Glen Velez, and many others. He has composed for film, television, dance, and theater, and has performed in concerts and festivals throughout the world, drawing from classical Indian, jazz, and world music to create a distinctive signature sound. Sanjoy Bandopadhyay Sitarist Pandit Sanjoy Bandopadhyay is head of the department of instrumental music at Bharati University in Kolkata and director of the Tagore Centre of Documentation and Research of Languishing & Obsolescent Musical Instruments. He has held positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Alberta, the University of Colorado, and the University of Chicago as well as a number of universities in India. He is currently involved in an international music collaboration with Canadian pianist Yaroslav Senyshyn. As a sitarist, Pt. Bandopadhyay has produced ten CDs and a DVD. He has performed widely in India and on the American, European, and African continents. Samir Chatterjee Pt. Samir Chatterjee, tabla, has performed around the world as a soloist and with other outstanding musicians from both Indian and Western traditions. He performed at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2007. His compositions are widely acclaimed, as are his writings. Pt. Chatterjee is an A-rated artist of the national radio and television of India. He is featured on numerous recordings as soloist, accompanying many of India's greatest musicians, and in collaboration with Western musicians of outstanding caliber. He has become a catalyst in the fusion of Indian and Western music, performing with jazz, classical, and avant-garde musicians and ensembles. He is a member of the jazz trio SYNC and the quintet Inner Diaspora with Mark Feldman and Eric Friedlander, and is the composer and director of Nacho Nacho–Gypsy Storyteller, Chhand-Anand World Percussion Ensemble, and Dawn to Dusk and Beyond. Pt. Chatterjee is the founder and director of Chhandayan, an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Indian music and culture. He is on the faculty at Yale University, the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Pittsburgh, and the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. [Note: Photo. No credit necessary.
