Think of Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams, ; Lester Young, Jay McShann and Charlie Parker and you think of Kansas City. During the 1920's and 30's, Kansas City was one of the major jazz cities in the world. The area around 18th and Vine was filled to the brim with clubs and speakeasies that featured the best jazz musicians around. Today, Kansas City still revels in it's past musical heritage, and is the home of the American Jazz Museum (www.americanjazzmuseum.com) and the Marr Sound Archives (www.library.umkc.edu/marr) which is located less than a mile from the hotel and easily reached using the hotel shuttle or a taxi. The Archives are home to thousands of jazz and blues sound recordings, vintage radio programs, sheet music; original arrangements and recordings in a wide range of historic formats including LPs, 78s, 45s, cylinders, transcription discs, open-reel tapes, vintage phonographs and much more!
