Motown Celebrates Its Musical Legends In The 2013 Detroit Jazz Fest

On April 23, 2013, the Producers of the world-renowned Detroit Jazz Festival announced what promises to be another outstanding lineup of nationally and internationally renowned artists in addition to the generations of Detroit players who put the city on the map as one of the historically significant centers for the music.

Artistic Director Chris Collins showed that his first smash year at the helm was no fluke as he revealed the list of stars who will be appearing in Downtown Detroit Labor Day Weekend. Collins selected the lineup, which pays special attention, to "the language of jazz and the generations of musicians who have dedicated their lives to propagating its many dialects."

Collins announced this year's Artist-In-Residence, Panamanian Pianist Danilo Perez who is recognized as one of the most celebrated players in modern music. Perez, who has been Wayne Shorter's keyboard man for the better part of 10 years, just came off a stint as Director of his nation's own Jazz festival. As part of his duties, Perez will premiere a new work titled "Panama 500, " which will open The Festival on Friday, August 30. Joining Perez that night will be Renaissance Man David Murray and his Big Band which will feature Macy Gray. The Detroit lineup features Jazz Godfather Marcus Belgrave, James Carter paying tribute to the legendary Don Byas, the Detroit Homecoming Band featuring Geri Allen and drummer Francisco Mora Catlett's AFRO HORN MX. Other stars appearing that weekend include Charles Lloyd with Bill Frisell, Ahmad Jamal, Joshua Redman, a Sax Summit with Ravi Coltrane, Dave Liebman, and Joe Lovano, Jon Faddis, and Gregory Porter.

"We strive to make the Detroit Jazz Festival's Labor Day weekend concerts more exceptional every year, and continue to show people from around the world what our great city has to offer, " said Gretchen Valade, chair of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation board of directors. "Everything we do at the Detroit Jazz Festival is meant to enrich the lives of music lovers everywhere. We want to make it possible for them to see their favorite jazz artists all in one place, and most importantly, offering these performances for free. It's not just about amazing music; it's about making it available for anyone that wants to listen."
