Phil Palombi Plays Scott LaFaro's Bass This Weekend at the Kitano

A CD release Party at the Kitano in NYC—Friday and Saturday nights, April 29th & 30th! In support of his newest release, entitled RE:Person I Knew—A Tribute to Scott LaFaro, Phil Palombi will be leading a trio at the Kitano this weekend. Joining him on the gigs will be legendary pianist Don Friedman and drum great Eliot Zigmund. The special guest for the event, however, is Scott LaFaro's actual 1825 Abraham Prescott bass. This is the instrument that he recorded the legendary Village Vanguard sessions on, and this weekend will be the first time the bass has been used on a gig since Scott's untimely death in 1961.

The bass has been owned by the Kolstein bass shop since Scotty's accident in 1961. Sam Kolstein restored the bass for Scott back in 1959. After the accident, Scott's mother wasn't sure what to do with the bass, which was damaged in the car crash. Sam bought the bass from the family and kept it in storage, though he never had the courage to restore it (he and Scott were very close). In the late 1980's, Sam's son Barrie asked his father's permission to finally bring the bass back to life. The two of them worked out a strategy for the restoration and saved the instrument!

This past fall, Phil was granted the immense honor of being allowed to take the instrument out of the shop for a week to record a tribute CD to Scott. Pianist Don Friedman and drummer Eliot Zigmund joined him for the recording, which is called RE:Person I Knew—A Tribute to Scott LaFaro. Barrie thought it would be a great idea to have the bass played for the CD release party.
