Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival

The 3rd Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival will be taking place February 18 - 21, 2011. Sue Mingus and Justin DiCioccio, are the producers. This year's Mingus High School Competition and Festival will be bringing some of the country's most talented young jazz musicians to New York City. Twelve schools will be represented coming from California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York - to Manhattan School of Music.

Saturday, February 19 (afternoon beginning at 12:00 pm) will offer an afternoon of clinics and workshops led by members of the Mingus Orchestra, as well as an arranging clinic with Gunther Schuller, Sy Johnson and Boris Kozlov and student jam session concentrating on Mingus's music. Sunday, February 20 (all-day beginning at 10:00 am) will be the high school competition, including competing categories for both combos and big bands. The day will conclude at 6:30 pm with an awards ceremony preceded by a concert by the Mingus Dynasty and MSM Mingus Combo with Steve Slagle. (at Manhattan School of Music)

In addition two extraordinary events produced by Let My Children hear Music will also be taking place:
Friday, February 18 - Monday, February 21 the Mingus Big Band and Mingus Orchestra will be featured each evening at the Jazz Standard. (116 East 27th Street)

Saturday, February 19 (7:30 pm) a public concert bringing Mingus's music back to its Gospel and Blues roots, performed by the Mingus Orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller with the Colombian Harpist Edmar Castaneda as guest artist, will be given at St. Bartholomew's Church (Park Avenue at 50th Street)
