Jamaica Loses Music Archives

by R. Sagye La Rue

The defunct Jamacian Broadcast Corporation has lost 80% of its music and sound recordings. This includes: archival recordings, rare interviews, thousands of compact discs, and vinyl records. Bob Marley's complete collection is gone. The JBC archives was under the control of Besix a Belgium firm, from November 2005 thru November 2007.

Theft apparently occurred between 2004-2007;losing material vital to Jamaica's culture is nothing new. During the 1970s, JBC Television taped over older existing news events, speeches, music and audio tapes and festivals. Believe if you will the station had lack money to purchase new tapes.

Olivia Grange minister of Information and Culture said, she felt confident police would go all out to find those responsible for the loss of the most comprehensive music collection in Jamaica. Futhermore, Grange has called upon collectors to contribute vintage vinyl or copies of recordings, compact discs, and audio tape etc. to help rebuild Jamaica's music library. JBC radio began in 1959.
