Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in Daytona Beach

Jazz lovers will be able to experience something different when the North East Florida Jazz Association brings a live performance of “Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" to the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach on Sunday, January 27 as part of their 2008 Concert series.

The one-act play by Lanie Robertson portrays the legendary Billie Holiday at the end of her life. Jan Crawford will play the role of Holiday who was affectionately known as Lady Day to jazz fans throughout the world. Crawford is the niece of noted jazz performer and former Palm Coast resident Clyde Crawford who, with his brothers Jimmy and Paul Crawford performed as The Crawford Brothers and played with Holiday as well as other jazz greats including Duke Ellington. Clyde Crawford died in 2005 of liver cancer, but his niece carries on his legacy and is a talented jazz vocalist. Internationally acclaimed jazz keyboardist Doug Carn will play the role of pianist Jimmy Powers. Both performers presently live in St. Augustine.

“The NEFJA is pleased to be able to bring this unique live performance to the local area," says NEFJA President Muriel McCoy. “Doug has performed the role of Billy's accompanist Jimmy Powers at the Studio Theater in Washington, D.C. and audiences loved it! It's a great play and showcases the extraordinary talents of Doug and Jan as they bring Lady Day to life for local jazz enthusiasts. It's an unprecedented opportunity to experience this play at an affordable price."

The concert will take place at 2:30 pm and is open to the general public. Ticket prices are $20 for NEFJA members and $25 for non-members. The Museum of Arts and Sciences is located at 352 South Nova Road. Tickets can be purchased at Aimee's Hallmark Store in Palm Coast or from Muriel McCoy at (386) 445-1329.

The Northeast Florida Jazz Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the performance, preservation, and promotion of jazz. In addition to their regular annual concert series, the NEFJA will present their 3rd Annual Jazz Festival on May 10 - 11. Details will be announced soon. Proceeds from the performance and the Festival will go to provide scholarships to talented local jazz students.
