Shelly Berg and Gregg Field At Yoshi's

Popular California musicians Shelly Berg and Gregg Field will perform with the jazz ensembles of California State University, East Bay at Yoshi's in Oakland's Jack London Square on Monday, Feb. 26. Berg (see photo) —a pianist, composer, arranger, and educator—has enjoyed a long collaboration with legendary trombonist Bill Watrous and has served as musical director for Carmen Bradford, former vocalist for the Count Basie orchestra. He has been the pianist of choice for vocalists Monica Mancini, Patti Austin, Tierney Sutton, and Joli Jones.

Field has been voted "one of the world's greatest drummers" by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine. His past musical collaborators included Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Joe Sample, Rosemary Clooney, Vince Gill, Dianne Schuur, Wallace Roney, Joe Williams, Mel Torme, James Ingram, Patrick Williams, Puff Daddy, Amy Grant, and Grover Washington, Jr.

"This is a central event in the life of the Music Department each year, " said Frank La Rocca, the department chair. "We are thrilled to have such distinguished guest artists. I hope the campus and wider community understands how vital the support of our music scholarship program is to our students. I encourage everyone to buy a ticket and enjoy the evening while supporting a very worthy cause."
