Javon Jackson will play at Zanzibar Blue

Popular Philadelphia Jazz Club Zanzibar Blue announced the appearance of tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson on Friday and Saturday, February 3 & 4, 2006.

Berklee School of Music graduate Javon Jackson began playing the jazz clubs of Denver, Colorado when he was 16. As a high School student, he was a member of McDonald's All-American Band, and it was during this time that he met and became friends with Branford Marsalis.

Invited to sit in with the Jazz Messengers earned him a place in the band headed by Art Blakey where he stayed for the next three years.

Afterwards, Jackson toured with Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones and Cedar Walton. In 1991 he made his first recording as a bandleader and in 1994 was signed to Blue Note Records where his first album, “When The Time Is Right” was produced by the legendary Betty Carter. In all, he has recorded six albums for Blue Note.

Jackson's style has moved away from his roots in hard bop and has evolved into something more organic and groove-based. The Boston Globe says Javon Jackson is “one of the best young tenor saxophonists to emerge in the last decade”.
