Performing compositions by Roswell Rudd, traditional Malian folk music, and an interpretation of Thelonious Monk's Jackie-ing

Trombonist extraordinaire Roswell Rudd and Malian kora master Mamadou Diabate, along with Balla Kouyate, Mawuena Kodjovi, Henry Schroy, Mar Gueye and Jorge Amorim, perform a fascinating blend of jazz and African music that has met with much critical acclaim in recent years. Their stirring music, noted for its beauty and sensitivity, is a rare encounter that captures the essence of both jazz and Malian music. Roswell Rudd, who has influenced an entire generation of trombonists, is known for his work with groundbreaking groups and musicians like Herbie Nichols, the New York Art Quartet, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Carla Bley, and Steve Lacy. One of the giants of post-bop jazz, he was a pivotal figure in the “free jazz” movement of the '60s.

MALIcool had its US debut at St. Ann's Warehouse in February 2004. The CD MALIcool was recorded in 2001 in Bamako, Mali, and released in the US in 2002 (Sunnyside/Universal), making it onto various “Top Ten” lists of the year.
