A Ruby in the Rough

Tale of Tales reveals another playable character for their upcoming horror game The Path. Ruby is the fifth of six Red Girls that the player will use to navigate through the Red Ridinghood-inspired title. Tale of Tales is revealing these avatars one by one, as the production of The Path continues. In the game, as in the fairy tale, the player will help each girl to get to her grandmother's house and resist the temptation of leaving the path. Or give in to it.

After her sisters Robin, Carmen, Rose and Ginger, it is now time for Ruby to make her appearance.

The other girls call her "goth"... It's one way of killing people: stereotyping them, putting them in a box and throwing it away. But there's more to Ruby than meets the eye. A young lady by now, 15 years of age. Life has opened up to her as a rotting flower of corruption. She can see through it all but remains an enigma herself.

When asked about her leg brace, Ruby says she's in pain. But doesn't specify where it hurts.

Ruby does not long for death. She takes a perverse pleasure in observing the extreme decay of adult society. But what will happen when she ceases to be a witness and becomes a participant instead?

Ruby talks to her Livejournal as if it were a stranger. You won't find any secrets in it. There is no man behind the curtain.

The Ruby character was featured in the early demo of The Path that was a finalist in the Independent Games Festival. But her model and texture have been revised for the final game. The results of which can be seen on the website of The Path.

The Path is a PC game scheduled for release in Spring 2009. Designed by media artists Auriea Harvey (US) and Michael Samyn (BE), The Path takes a very different approach to computer gaming. Just like their other projects - The Endless Forest and The Graveyard - The Path does not involve any combat or competition. Instead it offers a free-form narrative atmosphere that inspires imagination and association. For Tale of Tales, games are just one form of entertainment among many that can be created with the interactive medium. Unlike any other game designers, Harvey and Samyn are exploring this immense potential. In essence, they are using the same medium to create something entirely different.

Goth diva Jarboe is composing a unique soundtrack for The Path. And graphic designer Marian Bantjes is creating hand-drawn lettering and a new logo, which will soon be revealed.
