Setting the course for GaLaBau 2022 and beyond

NürnbergMesse and the Federal Association of Horticulture, Landscaping and Sports Facilities (Bundesverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau, BGL) are sending out a strong signal in these unusual times by extending their collaboration for the two-yearly GaLaBau, Leading International Trade Fair for the Planning, Construction and Maintenance of Urban Green and Open Spaces, Sports Fields, Golf Courses and Playground Design, to include a further five events. This means they will continue working together until at least 2030. At the same time, the initial plans and objectives have been announced for GaLaBau 2022, which will be held in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 14 to 17 September 2022. Preparations for this next green family gathering are already in full swing. And things are still happening in Nuremberg for the original dates scheduled for GaLaBau 2020, with smaller gatherings for the green sector to be held both on-site and online.

GaLaBau has been taking place at the NürnbergMesse venue since 1986. BGL and NürnbergMesse have now advised that they are extending their collaboration to cover a further five events – until at least 2030, in other words. "The GaLaBau trade fair here in Nuremberg is a highly successful format, " observes BGL President Lutze von Wurmb. "Over the decades we have grown along with our partner, NürnbergMesse. Our wishes and plans for the future are taken into consideration, and our exhibitors and trade visitors know and appreciate this venue. The infrastructure is just right, and Nuremberg provides an attractive background for our key trade fair event. In continuing our successful collaboration, we are also aiming to give the green light for a successful GaLaBau 2022."

Peter Ottmann, CEO NürnbergMesse GmbH, adds: "This long-term agreement is a strong signal and a major sign of confidence, especially in times like the present. We wish to thank our long-standing partner BGL, and will enthusiastically continue our positive collaboration to further develop the leading position GaLaBau enjoys."

Milestones for GaLaBau 2022
This is the setting in which in-depth planning for GaLaBau 2022 is now in progress. The organizational milestones are in place. Because of the unusual situation that meant the cancellation of the regular GaLaBau in 2020, everything has been brought forward a little: exhibitors can start registering from March 2021, the early booking discount will apply until September 2021, and stands will be confirmed in March 2022.

Trend themes at GaLaBau 2022
Preparations are running at full speed not only in terms of organization but also the detail of the trade fair itself. As for the question of which themes will be the subject of particular focus at GaLaBau 2022, Stefan Dittrich, Executive Director GaLaBau at NürnbergMesse, can already offer some specific examples: "Digitalization is definitely one of the major themes for the future in the world of garden design and landscaping. For GaLaBau 2022, we plan to have a dedicated area for this theme, with workshops and products to try out – both for visitors who are only just starting out and those who have some experience in this field. It will also be very interesting to see which changes the green sector will face in the post-coronavirus period. In recent months we have already begun to notice the importance of urban parks, both now and in the future. We are also working on further expanding our established Job Board and adapting it to potential new professional fields and other changes. The forward-looking themes for GaLaBau 2022 still include battery technologies for maintenance machinery, alternative drive technologies and e-mobility for construction machinery and vehicles." BGL will deal with the theme of high-quality garden furnishings (BBQ, Smart Garden) in the familiar Garten[T]Räume (Garden of Dreams) area, for example. And just as relevant is the question of climate protection (e.g. green roofs, summer heat waves, rainwater treatment). These and other topics will be developed in depth during the next two years.

Current events in Nuremberg and online
Nuremberg City Centre will be a blaze of green from 16 to 27 September 2020. The project "Lorenz green … in the middle of the city", jointly supported by NürnbergMesse, the Bavarian state association and BGL, is creating a green oasis in the middle of the city, centred on the Lorenzkirche. A series of concerts and other events on the theme of "God the creator makes humankind" will be held both in the Lorenzkirche and on the "green stage". The opening ceremony for the project was held on 16 September in the presence of Markus König, Mayor of Nuremberg, and Bavaria's Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber. And things are still happening at the NürnbergMesse venue for the original dates scheduled for GaLaBau 2020. BGL is holding both its Congress and the BGL Examination as usual, and the Ordinary General Meeting of the Garden Directors' Conference (GALK) will also be held at the premises of NürnbergMesse – with due observance of all the appropriate hygiene and safety precautions, of course. A highlight at the venue is the final – the German championship – for the Landscape Gardener Cup, the professional competition for trainees in garden design and landscaping, which will take place in the Exhibition Centre Park. Unfortunately there will be no public participation this year, but the event will be reported live via social media channels.

Rounding out the programme for GaLaBau 2020 will be the online World Urban Parks Conference on 18 September. In various webinars, experts will discuss current trends and themes in the community represented by the urban park, leisure and recreation sector.
