From a handshake to world-leading fair in 25 years

Every two years in spring the Who-is-who of the international paints and coatings industry comes together at the European Coatings SHOW in Nuremberg. It is the first product of a long and successful partnership which can now look back on 25 years. Since 1991, in close cooperation, Vincentz Network and NürnbergMesse have developed this event into a world-leading fair for the industry. It has now become a cluster of international coatings events, with trade fairs in North America and India. "The 25-year partnership with Vincentz Network shows how successfully publishing houses and trade fair companies can work together – for mutual benefit", said the NürnbergMesse CEOs, Dr. Roland Fleck and Peter Ottmann, commenting on the significance of this close cooperation.

It all began with a hand shake in 1990 – namely between Dr. Lothar Vincentz, Publishing House Managing Director Vincentz Network and Dr. Hartwig Hauck, founding Managing Director of NürnbergMesse. With this step both laid the foundations for a genuine and lasting partnership, which has ultimately led to the creation of a world-leading fair with subsidiaries in the USA and India.

25 years of cooperation between Vincentz Network and NürnbergMesse – how it all began: Dr. Lothar Vincentz, former Managing Director, Vincentz Network (r), founding Managing Director of NürnbergMesse, Dr. Hartwig Hauck (l) and Klaus Geissler, then Member of the Management Board, Vincentz Network (centre).

This close cooperation between Vincentz Network and NürnbergMesse has also continued with the ALTENPFLEGE fair and in the recent past with AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING EXPO.

The European Coatings SHOW celebrated its premiere in 1991 – at that time still held under the name "Farbe + Lack" - and it demonstrates the enormous development which the trade fair has since undergone. The key figures for the then event have grown and the European Coatings SHOW has become the global leading fair for the sector. Whereas the first edition attracted 266 exhibitors and around 4,000 trade visitors to Nuremberg, the figures have now multiplied several times over and the European Coatings SHOW has become the leading international event for the industry. In 2015, for the first time, the fair has attracted over 1,000 exhibiting companies and is expecting more than 27,000 trade visitors from around 110 countries.

Secret of success: focus on the industry instead of mass event business
Both partners attribute the success of the ECS to the consistent orientation of the event towards the needs and requirements of the sector experts: "Instead of us concentrating on the major mass events, we specifically address experts in the respective sectors and tailor our events to their specific requirements", says Jonas Vincentz, Managing Director Vincentz Network, describing the joint recipe for success. "In this connection, the constant further development of the event plays a major role. The current themes in the sector are picked up and correspondingly processed", adds Richard Krowoza, Member of the Management Board NürnbergMesse, who has been present since the start of the cooperation. Also very happy with the development is Jürgen Nowak, Publishing House Manager Coatings at Vincentz Network. "The European Coatings CONGRESS creates the preconditions for current research results and the latest findings which inspire the sector to produce innovations. With the "ECS Reloaded" as a virtual update of the European Coatings SHOW, exhibitors and visitors can enter into an online exchange on the latest developments in the years in between the event."

Worldwide cooperation also in North America and India
Since 2008 the American Coatings SHOW has been held in alternation with the European Coatings SHOW in Nuremberg on the other side of the Atlantic. A consistent and correct step, as the development of the event shows: in 2014 the American Coatings SHOW registered 480 exhibitors and 8, 700 visitors. It is repeatedly listed by US industry magazine Trade Show Executive as one of the 50 fastest-growing trade fairs in the USA.

The most recent member of the Vincentz Network and NürnbergMesse coatings events cluster is PAINTINDIA. In 2013 both cooperation partners acquired holdings in the Indian trade fair from Colour Publications, the oldest and leading publishing house in the country for technical-scientific trade journals. The three cooperation partners will now jointly further develop and extend PAINTINDIA. This cooperation was also preceded by a long-standing, established partnership – the cooperation between Vincentz Network and Colour Publications goes back to the grandfathers' generation of the current Managing Directors Jonas Vincentz and Dilip Raghavan. Since it was first held in 1993, the Indian publishing house has succeeded in establishing PAINTINDIA as a leading forum for the Indian paints and coatings industry.

Vincentz Network was founded in 1893 by Curt Rudolf Vincentz – at that time as a specialist publisher for diverse sectors. With time the company extended this focus to the staging of trade fairs and congresses.

NürnbergMesse is one of the 15 largest exhibition companies in the world and among the Top Ten in Europe. The portfolio covers some 120 national and international exhibitions and congresses and approx. 40 sponsored pavilions at the Nuremberg location and worldwide.
