Anuga Frozen Food: the international frozen food sector is meeting in Cologne

Anuga Frozen Food is the concentrated business platform for the frozen food sector at Anuga, the world's most important trade fair for the food and beverage industry, which will take place from 5 to 9 October 2013 in Cologne. 502 exhibitors from around 50 countries will present their wide range of products on a gross exhibition area of 27,500 m². Moreover, attractive frozen food products will also be exhibited at other Anuga trade shows, such as Anuga Bread & Bakery, Hot Beverages and Anuga Meat.

The "magic formula" in frozen food trends is still "fresh and convenient", which means that frozen food products are in step with the development of the overall food market. Consumers and professional chefs alike are looking for high-quality food products that are quick and easy to prepare and that also fulfil the requirements of healthy nutrition. The growing demand for frozen meals, frozen snacks and frozen baked goods confirms this trend.

A second trend that is also reflected in the frozen food sector is the transition to "pure" recipes that don't include additives. In this area as well, the frozen food industry is reacting to the changing needs of consumers.

What's more, frozen food manufacturers are expanding their product ranges in response to changes in today's eating habits. These changes are being driven by factors such as an increase in the number of cases of food allergies and changing attitudes toward food. Some of these new products are lactose and/or gluten-free food items. There is also no lack of frozen food products that meet the increasing demand for halal, organic and vegan/vegetarian cuisine.

In 2012 every German consumed 41 kilograms of frozen food products. The consumption figure per household was 83.6 kilograms. Sales for the total frozen food market - in other words, the retail food trade (including home delivery services) and the food service and catering market (the catering sector, institutional/communal catering, etc.) - amounted to 3.32 million tonnes in 2012. This amount corresponds to ¤12.017 billion in turnover, surpassing the ¤12 billion mark for the first time.

The results for 2012 once again demonstrate that the positive development in the frozen food sector - one of the five largest branches of the food industry in Germany - is very stable and is even generating slight growth in the food trade. Industry experts predict that there will once again be slight growth in 2013.

Frozen Food - the event for the frozen food sector
For the fourth time Koelnmesse will organize the "Frozen Food" event on 7 October 2013. The title of the event will be "The competition between frozen food and the fresh food section - do frozen food sections in retail stores need to be more attractive?" Industry and food trade representatives will come together in a relaxed atmosphere to discuss the current situation of frozen food sections in retail stores and what can be done to improve it.
