“Heat pump has more potential than was assumed”

The management of the trade fair Chillventa and the European Heat Pump Summit is to be taken over by Alexander Stein (40) on 1 November 2013. He follows in the footsteps of events manager Gabriele Hannwacker, who is retiring after a career spanning 35 years as an organizer of trade fairs and more than 25 years in the service of refrigeration and air conditioning technology. Having worked for 16 years in the exhibition business, Stein has accumulated a wealth of experience. In the following interview, these experts in trade fair organization explain their joint plans for the two events and talk about the highlights of the European Heat Pump Summit, which is being staged for the third time in the Exhibition Centre in Nuremberg on 15 and 16 October 2013.

Planning the European Heat Pump Summit 2013: Alexander Stein, the future events manager, between Gabriele Hannwacker and the technical coordinator Dr. Rainer Jakobs.
"Mr Stein, after studying business management and specializing in environment-oriented corporate governance, you were involved in developing trade fairs for NürnbergMesse. Your most recent activity was as a member of the team working on BIOFACH, the World Organic Trade Fair. What is your perspective on the combination of economy and ecology in respect of the heat pump?"

Alexander Stein:
""The themes of efficiency and saving energy play a crucial role in the case of refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation as well as heat pumps. But the contribution of these industries goes much further, and that's especially true in the case of the heat pump: it not only helps to reduce CO2 emissions but also plays a part in the energy transition to the use of renewables. I'm thinking here, for example, of the combination which arises from the direct use of solar electricity for the heat pump."

"Chillventa and the European Heat Pump Summit are alternating annual events that provide a platform where the industry can discuss and exchange ideas on innovations and markets. Mrs Hannwacker, what importance does the heat pump have for the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre?"

Gabriele Hannwacker:
"Since 2008, Chillventa has been the meeting place for international experts on the themes of refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation and the heat pump. From the outset, the heat pump was represented prominently at Chillventa. Every other year since 2009, the European Heat Pump Summit has increased the amount of information it makes available to heat pump experts. As a congress event with a supporting Foyer-Expo, the European Heat Pump Summit brings together planners and operators, science and research, as well as manufacturers of heat pumps and components. From the point of view of environmental impact, resource conservation and sustainability – the evidence shows the heat pump to be superior. We're committed to enabling the heat pump to achieve the recognition it deserves."

"What have you got in store for participants in the European Heat Pump Summit 2013?"

Alexander Stein:
"The spectrum of themes ranges from components and systems to market analyses at international level. We've also got on the agenda the discussion of the challenges for suppliers of heat pumps, like smart grids, and information on the latest international research and development. We're supported in this by numerous expert partners, and by Dr. Rainer Jakobs in particular. As the coordinator of the European Heat Pump Summit, with his professional advice and knowledge of the industry, his contribution is a major factor in the success of the event. No longer is it just participants from Europe who are attracted by the programme – specialists from other continents take advantage of the European Heat Pump Summit as an information platform."

Gabriele Hannwacker:
"With the European Heat Pump Summit, we're offering an overarching conference at which experts from across the globe can discuss issues at an advanced technical level. From experts for experts is our watchword. Lectures on the development of the European, Russian and Indian heat pump markets, the significance of the 20-20-20 targets of the EuropeanUnion, the optimization potential of components and heat pumps, and reports on implementation in practice are just a few of the themes that attendees can look forward to."

The Themes of the European Heat Pump Summit 2013 are:

Use of renewable energies with heat pumps
Market potential for heat pumps
Components and product development
Reports on the use of residential, commercial and industrial heat pumps in practice
Heat pumps for water heating
Technical innovations and prospects for the heat pump
The heat pumps as an important building block in Germany's transition to renewable energy

Foyer-Expo: discussion of heat pump technology
The accompanying Foyer-Expo offers heat pump and component manufacturers their own platform to present technical innovations and current products. In the immediate vicinity of the congress itself, the exhibition creates an ideal opportunity for heat pump and component manufacturers, experts from science and research, and planners and operators to engage in discussion of issues at a technical level.
