Located in the extreme north of Europe, Finland has a permanently cool climate with average annual temperatures of less than 2ºC. As the use of energy for heating is distinctly higher than in other European countries, the heat pump is a suitable energy-efficient producer of heat, although the cold Finnish climate imposes special conditions on the heat pump technology used. The national market for heat pumps grew by up to 30 per cent a year over the past years, so that the heat pump now already provides more than 10.2 per cent of the heat energy for residential buildings, commercial properties and public buildings. In relation to the number of inhabitants, Finland occupies a top position by international comparison. The Finnish heat pump experts in the industry association SULPU expect the number of heat pumps to continue to increase and assume that growth to one million heat pumps is possible by 2020.
