Cleanzone in Frankfurt promotes interdisciplinary exchange

Cleanrooms are used in numerous industries, and while there are often similarities between the challenges and the solutions, industries pursue their own individual concepts. Yet as costs and the pressure to innovate increase across the board, more and more users and providers of cleanroom technologies are looking further afield. On 22 and 23 October in Frankfurt, Cleanzone will be focusing on this development, creating an international platform for interdisciplinary knowledge transfer.

Ever more experts have come to recognise the value of this cross-industry exchange, as they are convinced that different industries have a lot to learn from one another with regard to cleanroom technology – and that too little has been made of such opportunities in the past. Small, local solutions are in demand across the industrial spectrum. The semiconductor industry is home to a noteworthy trend in this regard. This industry's ultimate goal is the miniaturisation of the structures being manufactured, in order to make it possible, for example, to put more and more information on a single silicon chip. In extremely sensitive areas such as these, even a single grain of dust can negatively impact the entire process. For quality reasons alone, this requires cleanrooms that are as small and perfectly controllable as possible – not to mention the fact that every cubic centimetre of cleanroom means added costs. The solution: only those components that are truly sensitive are placed in the cleanroom. Machines and devices that can be "unclean" are linked externally. Ideally, all that is really needed for the necessary cleanroom class is a small glove box.

Another noteworthy concept comes from the field of medical technology, where portable cleanroom containers are taken by truck to where they are needed. Instead of being prepared centrally in large cleanrooms, for example, surgical instruments are instead prepared directly on location and given to the surgeons in a sterile state. The food industry also has reason to share expertise with the pharmaceuticals industry, as both industries have a particular interest in microbiology, i.e. in protecting against microbial contamination in order to increase longevity. In the pharmaceuticals field, the standard supply and return air management offers a suitable solution.

The second Cleanzone in Frankfurt will be promoting this increasingly crucial interdisciplinary exchange. It will be doing so by addressing visitors from various industries in two clear areas of focus. "Technology & Micro-technology" is aimed at the microelectronics, micro-system technology, semiconductor, aerospace, optics and laser technology, automotive, electronics and precision engineering industries. "Life Sciences" is aimed at the pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, medical research, pharmacy and biotechnology industries. There are overlaps in the medical technology and packaging areas of application. The organiser supports exhibitors in their efforts to present their products and services at the trade fair in the most practical and striking manner possible. In addition, application-oriented presentations and panel discussions are planned for the Cleanzone Plaza event stage.

The Cleanzone Congress will be pursuing the same interdisciplinary approach with a high-calibre programme that takes an in-depth look not only at cross-industry trends, but also specialist areas. The following fields will be covered: Energy Efficiency, Cleanrooms & Hospitals, Nanotechnology & Measurement, Facility Management & Cleanroom Systems, Surface Cleanliness, The Future of Cleanroom Technology, Cleanroom Testing & Monitoring, Standardization and Sales & Services.

The various industries have shown a great deal of interest in this interdisciplinary approach. This is also reflected in the breadth of media participation, with a number of publishers serving as premium partners, including Wiley-VCH Verlag with its trade journal Reinraumtechnik, Vogel Industrie Medien GmbH with its titles Process, DeviceMed and Pharmatec, and Konradin Verlag with cav (Chemie, Anlagen, Verfahren), dei (Die Ernährungsindustrie) and Pharmaproduktion. Many other trade journals with an international reach are also providing communications support for Cleanzone in the most important user industries.
