FachPack 2013: exhibition with added value

The expected 37,000 visitors with money to invest (2012: 36,986) at FachPack in Nürnberg will be spoilt for choice from 24–26 September, when they can choose from products and services from around 1,500 companies (2012: 1,466) in the packaging, technology, processing and logistics segments. Once the list of companies to visit is complete, an extremely attractive supporting programme will compete for the favour of the packaging specialists. Fortunately, there are many oases of relaxation at the event that invite visitors to linger and refresh their mind and body.

Forums and congress: knowledge transfer with a welcome difference
One such example is the PackBox Forum in hall 4. Three different theme slots on each of the three days of the exhibition provide new and in-depth knowledge on all exhibition topics. Interested visitors can enjoy listening over a coffee and snack or actively contribute to the discussions. This time the Corrugated Cardboard Forum in the St. Petersburg room of NCC Ost on 25 September examines the subject of "Corrugated Cardboard – Success Factor in the Supply Chain".

Here supply chain experts from trade, industry and the packaging sector discuss how to make optimum use of the value creation contributed by the most important transport packaging. The AIPIA Congress (Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association based in the Netherlands) takes place for the first time during FachPack in Nürnberg. In the many English-language presentations in NCC Ost on 24 September, everything is geared to "active and intelligent packages as new marketing tools". Thursday, 26 September, is Careers Day with a variety of events especially for students, prospective packaging specialists and career changers from other sectors, e.g. from mechanical engineering or economics.

An arena of solid board – who could come up with such an idea?
It was originally a kind of battleground. Spectacular animal fighting, chariot races, contests or theatre performances filled the arenas in the Ancient World. The visit to an amphitheatre promised unusual experiences, thrills included. An impressive, approx. six-foot high oval of solid board in the exhibition hall? Who could come up with such an idea? The Verband Vollpappe-Kartonagen (VVK – Solid Board Packaging Association) together with smart students from the Institute for Industrial Design (IFID) at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Welcome to the World of Experience of Solid Board! Although the arena in hall 7 doesn't invite sporting competitions, it certainly guarantees experiences of a special kind. Where can the convincing properties of solid board be experienced better than in this 300-m² world of experience?

Solid board is a versatile, efficient and environmentally compatible packaging material that is suitable for a broad spectrum of packaging for many different fields of application – like robust storage and transport packaging, logistics-based and eye-catching shipping and shelf-ready packaging, crates, baskets, and boxes for fruit and vegetables, meat and sausages, fish and other foods, according to VVK. About 550,000 tons of solid board packaging worth approx. 550 million euros are manufactured in Germany every year. Some 80 per cent of solid board packaging is used in the food industry. The solid board at the special show cleverly highlights its core advantages like stability and efficiency, individuality through its varied construction, design and print possibilities, and cost-effectiveness through its high strength and low material volume. For example, a splashing waterfall in the experience world at FachPack demonstrates the impressive wet strength of this packaging material.

Although the mainly small and medium-size member firms of the packaging association naturally also produce packaging from solid board, there are hardly any to be seen at the special show. The association and students promote "their" packaging material with solid board applications of a different kind: including a gramophone, a radio and a parachute of solid board – all definitely in a working state, of course! Industrial design students are also on the stand together with experienced packaging experts and happy to explain their original inventions. And visitors should be prepared to use all their senses of perception and be surprised by the unexpected!
Special shows – stylish, medical, original and historical

The special show Packaging Design presents examples of packaging design mainly for brand communication and material. Here bayern design focuses on the importance of design for the packaging industry and its users with the aid of selected exhibits to present the professional design of shelf-ready packaging, transport packaging and displays. Creativity and experimental approaches in the search for functional packaging are demonstrated live by students in hall 7A. A whole theme park is devoted to "Packaging in Medical Technology and Pharmacy".

Here the requirements for innovative concepts for design, high-quality material and attractive appearance are particularly demanding. Packages in the pharmaceutical environment achieve far more than product protection. They help to ensure the correct dosage and application, prevent product piracy, are childproof and suitable for the elderly. These are the conflicting requirements covered by the special show in hall 9. The German Packaging Award is an unbelievable 50 years old! Prize-winning packaging solutions can be admired in hall 6. The German Packaging Museum invites FachPack visitors to a journey back in time through the history of international packaging. The exciting show in hall 6 uses exhibits from everyday life and cultural and art history to put the limelight on packaging as a reflection of cultural and social development.
