ECS 2013: concentrated coatings knowledge again in Nürnberg

The European Coatings Congress and European Coatings Show in mid March 2013 once again present the latest developments for the production of high-quality coatings, paints, sealants, construction chemicals and adhesives. The European Coatings SHOW has already exceeded the size of the previous event in 2011 – and is still growing. The organizers report growth particularly in the production equipment segment.

Less is more: for the first time the European Coatings Show and Congress overlap by only one day. The congress runs from 18–19 March and the show from 19–21 March 2013. This leaves visitors more time for talks at the congress or show.

Answers to challenges: "no better platform"
As the 2011 show was booked up, the organizers have enlarged the display space for 2013. One desired side effect is that the laboratory and production equipment and testing and measuring equipment segments are now concentrated in the centre of the show in halls 5 and 6.
Mechanical processes are essential for coatings manufacture, e.g. for properly mixing pigments and binders. To achieve high-quality coatings, it is all the more crucial to constantly compare existing processes with a benchmark. The European Coatings Show as leading exhibition has offered this excellent possibility for years.

From milling, mixing, screening, filtering and dosing to filling – the European Coatings Show 2013 again offers the entire spectrum of laboratory and production equipment and testing and measuring equipment for manufacturing high-grade paints and coatings from raw materials. About 30 per cent of the exhibitors present solutions in this segment – trend still rising. This platform has been used successfully for years by companies such as Bühler AG. The Swiss company also presents its plant engineering expertise and innovations in mixing and dispersing technology at the show in 2013. "The requirements in the coatings segment are constantly changing, " says Silvia Wipfli, Marketing & Communication Manager at Bühler AG, Grinding & Dispersing Technologies. "For us as supplier of production equipment there is no better platform – especially in Europe − than the European Coatings SHOW for showing our customers in the paint and coatings industry how we tackle these challenges, adapt the processes or make them more flexible, or provide new solutions too."

Congress: of greenwashing and cool roofs
As usual, the twelfth edition of Europe's leading congress on coatings technology promises specialist knowledge at the highest level. Congress visitors can update on the most recent developments from science and industry at the altogether 24 series of presentations on the two days. The topics range from Architectural Coatings, Wood Coatings, Protective Coatings, Automotive Coatings, Epoxy Coatings, Biobased Coatings, Titanium Dioxide Applications, Radiation Curing and Waterborne Coatings, Functional Materials, Polyurethanes and Nanotechnology to Sealants, Adhesives and Construction Chemicals. The "Science Today − Coatings Tomorrow" series (18 March, 14:30) presents the latest scientific findings that could be incorporated in future coating solutions. A comprehensive poster session supplements the Congress.

All just a green coating? The keynote speaker at the Congress presents interesting new approaches for the current discussion on sustainability in the coatings industry.

Dr. Adita Ranada from the consulting and market research company Lux Research Inc. will present an innovative assessment approach for sustainability, which can be used to distinguish greenwashed solutions from solutions with genuine sustainability value. The currently much-discussed "cool roofs" are one example.
Another keynote speaker, Klemens Bartmann of DuPont Performance Coatings, shows how the "sustainability" challenge can be transformed into sustainable opportunities.

The best presentation at the Congress will, of course, receive the European Coatings Award again in 2013. The winner can look forward to a prestigious sculpture and prize money.

Introduction in advance: eleven practical tutorials
Congress participants can brush up their coatings knowledge at eleven exclusive tutorials on Sunday, 17 March 2013 – before the congress. A total of eleven 90-minute presentations will be given from 15:00 to 18:30 on Sunday, before the main congress. They offer the participants an introduction to important coating topics, e.g. Radiation Curing, Epoxy Coatings or Sustainable Technologies.

Smart event planner for 2013
With the aid of the EC Market Navigator visitors can compile their own personal schedule for the show. This tool makes it easier to find stands and new products and arrange meetings at the show. The free apps for iPhone, iPad and Androids provide event information to go. They can be downloaded from the app store or the Google Play Store. The apps can be used to easily create a personal congress agenda. Users find information about exhibitors and products, interactive floor plans and exclusive abstracts of all presentations.
