WindMade brings wind power to Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum

On today's Global Wind Day, thousands of people will experience the power of wind energy at more than 200 events in at least 40 countries around the world. WindMade brings wind power directly to around 2,000 progressive companies, by celebrating Global Wind Day at the UN Global Compact's Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum (15-18 June).

Global Wind Day is building pressure on world leaders gathering the following week for the Rio+20 Summit to commit to doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030. As the official Sustainability Partner of the Corporate Sustainability Forum, WindMade will be able to demonstrate participants how renewable energy can become part of their business and sustainability model.

"We have a unique opportunity here to address those progressive companies looking at using wind power for improving their environmental footprint, " said Angelika Pullen, WindMade's Communications Director. "I am confident that our message will resonate and provide an strong input for the discussions on sustainable energy at this important UN event.

The UN Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum itself will be 100% powered by wind power, making it the first ever UN event to be labelled WindMade. Participants at the Forum will also be encouraged to contribute to offsetting the carbon emissions caused by their participation and travel.

Overall, the Corporate Sustainability Forum aims to strengthen the business contribution to sustainable development globally - seeking to bring greater scale to responsible business practices, to advance and diffuse sustainable innovation, and to stimulate broader collaboration between companies, governments, civil society and the UN.

When world leaders gather in Rio next week, they will have an opportunity to set a new course towards a more sustainable energy future. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's "Sustainable Energy for All" initiative calls for universal energy access, a doubling of energy efficiency and a doubling of renewable energy by 2030.

"We need to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030. This can be achieved with significant contribution from wind energy, both grid connected and for small-scale decentralized systems, ' said Kandeh K. Yumkella, the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the leader of the Secretary General's initiative. "The 'Global Wind Day' on June 15, does play a central role in contributing to the UNSG's Sustainable Energy For All initiative through galvanizing the much needed support for the wind energy industry from political leaders around the globe".
