Light+Building: Germany’s Minister of Eco-nomics to present Building Future Award

Germany's Minister for Economics and Technology, Philipp Rösler, will present the Building Future Award at the opening ceremony of Light+Building, the world's biggest trade fair for lighting and building-services technology, on 15 April 2012. The first Future Award of Light+Building goes to nanoscientist Kostya Ostrikov for his research work in the field of plasma nanotechnology, a special discipline that forms the basis for completely new methods of energy generation.

Thanks to Ostrikov's research work, it will be possible to produce nanomaterials for more efficient solar cells, batteries and a variety of other technical applications in a much more efficient, safe and environmentally friendly way in the future. Born in the Ukraine, the Australian scientist is considered to be the world's leading expert in the field of plasma nanoscience.

Ostrikov's research made it possible for the first time to manufacture solar cells without producing any poisonous gases or using heavy metals. At present, the nanoscientist is working with his team on a new generation of solar cells that consume significantly less energy in the production phase. Thus, by using plasmas in the coatings of the solar cells, it proved possible to reduce the temperatures required by several hundred degrees compared to conventional processes.

Messe Frankfurt presents the Building Future Award in cooperation with the German Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e.V. – ZVEI) and the Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Trades (Zentralverband der Deutschen Elektro- und Informationstechnischen Handwerke – ZVEH). The Award honours achievements of importance not only for society today but also for future generations. From now on, Messe Frankfurt will present the Building Future Award every two years during the opening ceremony of Light+Building.

With over 2,100 exhibitors, Light+Building is the world's biggest trade fair for lighting and intelligent building-services technology. Messe Frankfurt expects to welcome over 180, 000 visitors to the fair from 15 to 20 April. Energy efficiency is the motto of Light+Building 2012. The two top trends are 'Buildings as green power stations' and the 'Digitalisation of lighting and building services'.
