Expooptica 2012 combines a trade fair with professional training

Expooptica, the International Optics and Optometry Fair, which is organised by IFEMA and takes place in Madrid from 17 to 19 February, combines the trade exhibition with a presentation area, so visitors will go away with new ideas for their business and training, and keep abreast of the latest trends in the sector.

Some of the sector's most competitive firms are taking part in this platform. For example, ASSAILER, with an expert from the Varilux institute, will address The Revolution in Treatments and explain among other things how the introduction of cleanrooms can improve recovery processes by improving contact lens viscosity, adhesion and vacuum levels to achieve high quality and increasingly personalised treatment. AVIZOR, meanwhile, will deal with two questions of interest to professionals. First, Eye Care with the Help of Food Supplements: DMAE, Dry Eyes and Eye Fatigue, in which they will explain how some of the most common eye disorders might be avoided with the help of food supplements. In the second session, entitled Protecting Sight in the 21st Century: Contact Lenses, experts from Alta Eficacia Tecnológica and the Universidad Europea de Madrid, will outline the effects of ocular phototoxicity and the possibility of preventing it with yellow contact lenses using protective optical filters, as well as looking at the cleaning efficacy of the care systems for this type of lens in removing protein and lipid deposits.

Solutions, products and techniques

In their session LENTICON are planning to pose the following question to sector professionals: Have you ever thought of turning Scleral Lenses into Normal Corneas? That title indicates their solution for people with poor eyesight who have a low tolerance to permeable lenses but want to enjoy the best possible eyesight. VISIONIX will then put forward their Technology of the Future for Today's Optometry. Company chiefs will be showing visitors their innovative automated products, their calling card in a market they believe "shows little differentiation".

And trade visitors will also be able to learn what the Sports Eyesight Tests in the UEFA and FIFA Referee Exam Protocols are like from representatives of the Centro de Optometría Internacional (COI) who work with these sports bodies to assess these professionals, demonstrating that sight is one of the three pillars their performance is based on. The COI will also hold a Visual Therapy Workshop where participants will learn exercises and techniques to optimise their eyesight.

Progress in research and teaching

RECOLETOS BAJA VISIÓN's presentation is on Latest Generation Help for Low Vision and New Virtual Reality Technology (VIDP) which will examine the R&D&i prototype of the European Project (VIDIP) to help improve the quality of life of people with low vision, of which there are more than 1.5 million in Spain alone.

To ensure trade professionals keep up to date on the sector, the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña is running a session called Ongoing Training in Optics and Optometry: A Response to the Challenges of the 21st Century, in which they will be putting forward various academic options, among others, those offered by their Blended Course, which may be of interest to companies, professionals and future professionals, and those offered by Ongoing Training, including online training via the Visionline Campus.

New technologies will feature highly in most presentations. HOYA, for example will be inviting Expooptica visitors to discover a new concept of interactivity with them. During their talk the company plan to present tools geared towards the future of optics, such as the first totally interactive, augmented reality iPad application, designed to let customers see immediately the difference in performance of various types of lens in a real situation. They will also explain the characteristics of an application based on the visuReal measuring system that makes it possible to achieve the perfect measurements for correct centring with an iPad. Moreover it allows the optician to access all the visuReal functions from anywhere in their premises.

PRATS are devoting their talk to Opticenter, another app designed exclusively for iPad2, which allows complex measurements like the bridge, pupillary distance, pantoscopic angle and others to be taken, to provide the correct mathematical calculation for customised, cutting-edge, freeform varifocals or monofocals.

The company sessions are in addition to those taking place in Business OPTOM, at the 20th International Congress of Optometry, Contactology and Ophthalmic Optics, OPTOM 2012, which Expooptica 2012 visitors can also attend. These three sessions will look at How to tackle the Crisis by applying Common Sense, Elegant Leadership and the Keys and Trends in Optics Management in the 21st Century.
