Media Systems Congress at Prolight + Sound

The product areas covering media technology and systems integration at Prolight + Sound from 6 to 9 April 2011 will present, products and services relating, inter alia, to projection technology, conference and communications technology, building and room acoustics as well as media control systems and networks. The speakers in the Media Systems Congress will be passing on information based on the practical experience of experts who will be presenting the products, projects and services in these product areas. It is the largest information-disseminating event at Prolight + Sound and will take place on all four days of the trade fair in the Portalhaus. As part of the congress, the Association of German Sound Engineers (Verband Deutscher Tonmeister - VDT) and ALMA (The International Loudspeaker Association) will be presenting, in Hall 8, (Rooms: Symmetrie 2/4) and in Hall 9.1, (Room: Esprit), information and services as well as details of the work of the associations, with a specific focus on the concerns of the target group.

Some of the key themes are the changes to the safety standards for public buildings, as they relate to speech alarm systems and security technology. Changes to the German statutory regulations on places of public assembly (VStättV) need to be taken into account in the planning and operation of event venues. Both operators and planners will need to observe European DIN standards such as, e.g. DIN EN 50849, EN 54 and EN 13501. A further topic in the 'Basic Track' section will be changes to the allocation frequencies for radio links, which have become necessary as a result of the auction of radio frequencies.

Selection of topics:

Richard Merget, Bosch Communications Systems

Speech alarm systems in large areas with critical acoustics; what are the requirements of the new standards and regulations and how can these requirements best be planned for in practice?

Exposition of the current state of play with regard to the DIN standard VDE 0833-4. A consideration of the links between this standard and product standards in the EN 54 series. Consequences that emerge for sound systems at large-scale public venues or those with critical room acoustics; possible consequences that derive from this for building contractors and their clients.

Andreas Gause, Gerriets GmbH

German and European fire-protection standards in theatres and event venues.

Explanation of the situation with regard to the current standards in force in Germany for indicating the flame resistance of materials in accordance with DIN 4102-1 and DIN EN 13501-1. Comparison of testing procedures; comparison with current fire-protection standards for places of public assembly in other European countries and the conditions associated with them.

Dipl. Phys. Dirk Noy, Walters-Storyk Design Group (WSDG-e) GmbH

Speech intelligibility – from theory to current standardisation for PA systems

The lecture explains the various concepts and their individual features as well as their advantages and disadvantages, and presents a number of interesting case studies of various sizes of installation, from control rooms to churches and stadiums.

Claus-Peter, ZVEI (German Association of the German Electrical and Electronics Industry) – working party on sound systems engineering

Speech alarm systems that conform to DIN VDE 0833-4. What needs to be taken into account in planning and execution.

Speech alarm systems are a part of the fire alarm system. This kind of system is required in the overall concept for fire prevention in buildings. The lecture will explain the national regulations DIN VDE 0833-4 against the background of the DIN 14675/DIN VDE 0833-2 standards that are currently in force and the product standards EN54-24.

A further key topic area is audio engineering:

Christian Struck, Lawo AG; 8.0 M 91

Lawo AMBIT for modern surround productions from stereo to full 5.1 mix.

S. Feistel, A. Miron, B. C. Olson, AFMG Technologies GmbH

Easy Alignment of Subwoofer Delays: A New Software Approach

The delay alignment of subwoofers with flying line arrays or several full-range systems often presents a problem in practice. This lecture presents some new procedures for setting them up.

Dipl. Ing. Daniel Beer, Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT

Flat loudspeakers as a way of saving space and integrating sound systems in the home

The trend towards multi-channel audio reproduction and towards ever flatter designs in media equipment has significantly increased the level of interest in flat loudspeaker solutions over the past 20 years. This lecture will take a closer look at the causes of the loss of sound quality with ultra flat speakers and present practical approaches to solutions using new flat loudspeaker technology. In the home, the flat loudspeaker, when combined with a subwoofer, can replace a conventional loudspeaker system altogether.
