Messe München International turns in an operating profit for 2010

Record figures for exhibitors and visitors, increased sales and improved cost-efficiency thanks to restructuring - for Messe München International 2010 was a highly successful year for trade fairs. Despite the ongoing high cost of depreciation and interest for construction of the exhibition centre in Munich-Riem, the company was able - for the second time since moving into the new exhibition halls in 1998 – to turn in a profit in the millions of euros.

A total of 22 events and more than 240 third-party events filled the programme for 2010 in the exhibition halls at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, the International Congress Centre Munich (ICM) and the Munich Event and Order Centre (M, O, C, ). Over 2.2 million visitors flocked to these events, thronging the stands of the 37,000 plus exhibitors. Calculations to date put the sales figures for the year at over 250 million euros. The EBITDA is likely to come in at over 60 million euros, which is well above target.

The main drivers behind this outstanding result were the leading international trade fairs ispo, inhorgenta, bauma, IFAT ENTSORGA, EXPO REAL and electronica, which set new records for attendance, with increases of up to 16 percent in the numbers of exhibitors and visitors. As well as this success on the events front, the new efficiency and strategy programme of Messe München also contributed significantly to the positive result. The programme was launched in spring this year with the aim of increasing cost-efficiency in the company, promoting further growth and extending market leadership in the area of service quality and customer-orientation. Already the programme is bearing fruit and it is a realistic prospect that by as early as 2014 Messe München will be able to conduct its business without any subsidies from the shareholders. This date is much earlier than planned.

Messe München was able to continue the successful trend in its trade-fair operations overseas. Via strategic cooperations at bauma China in Shanghai, bC India in Mumbai, drinktechnology India in Mumbai and Logitrans in Istanbul, the company was able to attract additional contingents of exhibitors and visitors. In 2010 a total of over 40 trade fairs and trade-fair participations were organised abroad. The year also saw the premiere of a new fair for renewable energy - ENEREXPO in Hanoi. bauma China again broke all records: exhibitor numbers were up once more - by 15 percent over last time - and on the visitor side a rise of as much 33 percent was achieved. bauma China is the leading trade fair for the construction machinery industry in China and Asia.

Across all the industries served by Messe München´s events in 2011, it´s clear that the upwards trend is continuing. A number of fairs, among them the leading world fair BAU, which takes place in January, have been fully booked for months. The overseas events are also echoing this trend. At bC India, for example, which takes place in early February in Mumbai, all of the 80, 000 square metres of exhibition space have been sold. And by the end of 2010, the net space required for ispo china, which takes place in March, had already grown by over 60 percent above the total taken up at the previous event.
