Brau Beviale 2010: Successful industry get-together

Brau Beviale 2010 invited beverage specialists to Nürnberg from 10-12 November and the European beverage industry turned out in force: 1,348 exhibitors and 32,617 technical and commercial management experts poured into the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg.

A remarkable 96 % of the specialists from breweries and malting houses, producers of non-alcoholic drinks (a good 2 % more visitors than in 2008) and suppliers to the brewing and beverage industry were thoroughly satisfied with the exhibition. With a share of over 30 %, the number of visitors from abroad at the world's most important capital goods exhibition for the industry in 2010 was appreciably higher - mainly from Italy, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, Denmark, the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Eastern and Eastern Europe. As expected, the German visitors came mainly from the beer state of Bavaria, followed by Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhineland Palatinate. The proportion of women visiting was as large as almost 14 %.

93 % of the exhibitors rate their overall success at Brau Beviale 2010 positively. 94 % made new business connections and 91 % are hoping for noticeable follow-up business.

The suppliers of beverage raw materials, technologies, marketing products and logistics, a good 40 % of them international, were delighted with the extremely lively interest of highly qualified experts, of whom 89 % are involved in investment decisions in their companies. The exceptionally high quality of the visitors was confirmed by the share of members of business and corporate management, which grew to almost 36 %, and by distinctly more visitors from research, development and design. Almost every second visitor came to Nürnberg to source information about new products and almost 63 % also want to use these in their own companies. Especially important aspects for the visitors are cultivating existing business contacts and making new ones, exchanging views, training, market orientation, and preparing for investment decisions. They are traditionally mainly interested in the largest product segment technology (57 %, multiple answers), followed by raw materials (41 %), almost level-pegging with operating and laboratory equipment, energy management, working materials and packaging materials, services, marketing, catering equipment and beverage logistics.

More than 20 suppliers and service providers in the "Energy & Water" theme pavilion, which was organized together with the Competence Pool Weihenstephan of Munich Technical University, provided information on renewable energy, rational energy conversion, cogeneration units, contracting, disinfection, and recovery, analysis and treatment of water.

The "Future Beverage Industry 20XX" theme pavilion ventured a look into the future of the beverage industry. How can costs be cut? What technologies help to increase production? How can quality management be improved? Around a dozen companies presented visions and creative ideas for the future of the beverage industry in cooperation with the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei (Brewery Research and Training Institute) of Berlin. These ranged from new technology and software solutions and innovative sales aids to efficient logistics ideas.

47 % of the visitors definitely included a visit to the two theme pavilions in their tour of the exhibition.

The European Beer Star Award was launched jointly by Private Brauereien Bayern - the Bavarian private breweries association and honorary sponsor of the exhibition - and the German and European federations in 2004. 88 beer experts from 21 nations tasted and judged the beers in advance in the Doemens Brewing Academy on the basis of consumer criteria: What does the head look like? How does the beer feel in the mouth? How does it taste? Are the typical criteria for the kind of beer fulfilled? The beers were judged in 44 categories - from light beer to the new category of "ultra strong beer". Exhibitors and visitors at Brau Beviale 2010 who appreciate a genuine beer with character also had a substantial say here. They tested the gold medal beers on the first day of the exhibition and selected their Consumers' Favourites: Gold for Adriaen Brouwer Dark Gold, NV Brouwery Roman, Oudenaarde (B), Silver for Meinel's Weizenbock, Familienbrauerei Meinel GmbH, Hof (D), and Bronze for Störtebeker Roggen-Weizen, Stralsunder Brauerei, Stralsund (D).

The Brau Beviale community impressively proved that they know how to celebrate at the many exhibitor parties and particularly at the "Night of the Winners". Exhibition stress or business hustle and bustle simply had no chance against the unique European Beer Star winners. Instead, there was time for good talks with partners, colleagues, friends and competitors - in other words, relaxation.

The next Brau Beviale takes place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 9-11 November 2011 - with an important new feature: The two leading exhibitions for the beverage industry, drinktec in Munich and Brau Beviale, are to cooperate in the PET segment. The PETpoint, the PET segment at drinktec, will also be present at Brau Beviale in Nürnberg starting in 2011.
