Offshore Europe 2009

A special series of international market briefings and seminars will take place at SPE Offshore Europe next month, with some of the world's brightest hotspots for new and emerging business and technologies in the spotlight.

The 2009 conference and exhibition – set to be the largest in the event's history – has a vast array of associated meetings being held throughout the week. These will range from exclusive business breakfasts and topical lunches to market briefings and seminars focusing on areas such as Brazil, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, India, Malaysia and the Americas. The market briefings and seminars are organised by the UK Government's UK Trade & Investment arm, while the Topical Lunches have been arranged by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

The extensive programme from the UKTI features top level speakers giving presentations on all aspects of doing business in these key markets. There will also be sessions focusing on the UK's own capabilities. The first afternoon of the show, Tuesday 8th September, will feature a Brazil Market Opportunities seminar with presenters from Petrobras, while afterwards there is a Russian Market Opportunities briefing.

The following day will see a UK Capability seminar, a UK Energy Excellence seminar and a Middle East and Africa Market Opportunities briefing. On the Thursday morning there will be an India Market Opportunities briefing, followed by another on Malaysia and a further briefing in the afternoon on the Americas – specifically Canada and Mexico. The final morning of the show will feature a further Middle East and Africa Market Opportunities briefing, as well as an Iceland Geothermal Energy opportunities seminar.

Key industry issues to feature in Topical Lunches

The SPE's Topical Lunches will each day feature a key industry issue, with the first on Day 1 to be given by Paul Horsnell, Managing Director, Head of Commodities Research at Barclays Capital, focusing on 'Economics of Oil'. The Day 2 talk will be given by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Total, Mr Christophe de Margerie, with his presentation entitled 'Competitiveness of the UKCS – Can the majors still play a role?' The final day's talk will be given by Sergio Kapusta, Chief Scientist and Manager Engineering Innovation and Technology, Shell Global Solutions International. Mr Kapusta will discuss 'Nanotechnology in the oil and gas industry: when, where and how?'

Last but not least, each day will feature Business Breakfasts, with the first day's organised by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce to feature talks by Mr Greg Guidry of Shell Upstream International, David Phillips of HSBC Global Equity Research, Oil & Gas, and Louise Kingham of the UK's Energy Institute. The Business Breakfast on Day 2 is being organised by Oil and Gas UK, and is entitled 'The Next Generation', while Day 3's Business Breakfast will feature a talk on safety by Kieron McFadyn, Executive Vice President Group HSSE and Social Performance of Shell.

The exhibition at this year's event is sold out, according to organiser Reed Exhibitions Limited, with the exhibition space sold totalling 22,620 square metres. This is a rise of 11% compared to the last show in 2007, itself a record breaker, and has resulted in the installation of a new 2,171sq metre area (Hall 4) to accommodate the increased demand. There are more than 1,400 companies exhibiting at next month's event, with more than 350 companies exhibiting in Aberdeen for the very first time.

In the exhibition there are country pavillions from Scotland, China, the United States, Norway, Germany, France, Spain, Canada, Italy, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Nigeria, Austria and Northern and Western Australia.

Other innovative developments at SPE Offshore Europe this year include a new feature entitled the 'People Zone', focusing on areas such as training, career development and travel.

There is also a special area dedicated to the innovative field of digital technology and solutions. The 'Digital Zone' showcases the latest software and technology for the Exploration & Production sector, and is displaying state-of-the-art products and solutions that enable companies to further integrate these technologies into the field development cycle for oil and gas production.

The overall theme of SPE Offshore Europe 2009 is 'Energy at a Crossroads: Making Choices'. There are four main pillars: climate and energy, the operating model, breakthrough technologies and people and skills.

SPE Offshore Europe delivers debate, learning, innovation and solutions, providing its industry with an ideal platform for professionals to meet, discuss and view at first hand the latest technology and solutions available.
