DSEi 2009: Reflecting The Increasing Integration Of Nations’ Defence

Against a backdrop of countries increasingly looking at integrating their defence and national security needs, this year's DSEi (Defence Systems & Equipment International) will have a major focus on the technologies and systems that are being developed to meet these needs. Around the world nations face increasingly diverse threats to their security. In addition to traditional defence requirements today's armed forces can also be dealing with a mixture of challenges including terrorism and insurgency. These all demand an unprecedented range of capabilities to defeat an enemy that can occupy a range of environments from dense urban areas to deserts and jungles as well as the maritime arena.

Companies including Smiths Detection and Thales, which already span both defence and national security applications, will be exhibiting alongside DSEi newcomers such as information management specialist Detica (now part of BAE Systems) and geographic information systems provider ESRI.

In addition to this the theme for the ever popular British Army demonstration area will also reflect the mix of threats that today's armed forces need to be trained and equipped to deal with.

DSEi is the world's largest international defence and security exhibition. It provides a unique forum where representatives of nations seeking products, technologies and services to defend their national security can see the latest solutions and talk to experts about their needs.

The exhibition is on track for another record exhibitor and visitor turnout. Organisers expect the event to be 10% larger than the previous show in 2007 when more than 1,350 exhibitors from 40 countries showcased their latest technologies, products and services.

DSEi 2009 takes place at ExCeL in London's Docklands from 8 to 11 September. In 2007 it attracted 77 official delegation from 50 countries – this year invitations have been extended to 54 countries to send government delegations.
