American Educational Research Association’s 2009 Annual Meeting

CERTPOINT Systems, a global provider of corporate training software and solutions, today announced Dr. Rachel Eunjoon Um, Manager of CERTPOINT's Content Solutions Group will present at the American Educational Research Association's (AERA) 2009 Annual Meeting on April 13-17, 2009 in San Diego, California.

Dr. Um will present a paper titled "How Positive Emotions affect Cognitive Processes in Multimedia Learning" on Tuesday, April 14th from 10:30am-12:05pm in the Gaslamp 4 room of the Omni Hotel in San Diego where a portion of the conference is being held. The presentation on cognitive and affective processes in multimedia learning environments explores the question: "Can positive emotions experienced during multimedia learning facilitate cognitive processes improving cognitive and affective outcomes?" The session will report on Dr. Um's investigation and findings on this research question.

In 2007 Dr. Um conducted an experiment with 118 college students. The participants were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions created by two design factors of inducing positive versus neutral emotions through a self-referencing mood induction procedure and aesthetic design of learning material. After analysis, the result showed that the aesthetic design of the materials can induce positive emotions in learners, and that these positive emotions improved cognitive learning outcomes, motivation, satisfaction and perception towards the materials. Based on this research, Dr. Um suggests that positive emotions and emotional design principles should be considered as important factors in instructional design and design of educational materials.

"This international event brings together exceptional minds and thought leadership to assist in the continued improvement inside the educational field. I am honored to have been selected to present at this year's AERA's Annual Meeting, " said Dr. Um.
