International Wood Industry Meets At Trade Fair For Wood Working

Hannover. "Making more out of wood - Technology for resource efficiency." That's the official tagline for LIGNA HANNOVER 2009, the leading trade fair and ideas forge for the international wood industry that runs from 18 to 22 May. The fair showcases the latest wood working and processing technologies and the material wood itself in all its many forms. The organizers, Deutsche Messe and the German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), are confident the fair will meet its target of 1,800 exhibitors (2007: 1,832) and 148,000 sqm (1, 593, 000 sq. ft) of net display space (2007: 148,800 sqm/1, 601,600 sq. ft). "It is in difficult economic times in particular that LIGNA HANNOVER is able to position itself as the world's foremost trade fair for the forestry and wood industries and lead the market in a positive direction with its focus on resource efficiency, " explains Stephan Ph. Kühne of Deutsche Messe's Board of Management. "LIGNA is much more than a business barometer. It shapes innovation cycles and leads the way for the entire wood and forestry industry. Trade fairs are doubly important when times are tough because they give industry direction and keep it up to date with the latest technological innovations. LIGNA drives capital investment decision-making in the market. Its core focus on resource efficiency is more relevant than ever, both in a commercial and in an ecological sense."

LIGNA is more international than any other forest and wood industry show anywhere in the world. More than half of its exhibitors come from outside of Germany. The No. 1 slot among the fair's top 10 exhibiting nations is held by Germany, whose exhibitors have so far booked more floor space than any other country. Next in the rankings are Italy, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Denmark, The Netherlands, Finland and Sweden. The fair's cosmopolitan appeal is further underscored by its highly international visitor profile: in 2007, it attracted over 100, 000 visitors from 92 nations, more than 45,000 of them from outside of Germany. All of this makes LIGNA HANNOVER a highly effective platform for building and maintaining international business relationships. Equally noteworthy is the fact that 92 percent of all attendees were industry professionals. That means quality visitors with high-level decision-making power in their respective organizations.

"Handwerk, Holz & mehr" - focal point for joiners, cabinetmakers and carpenters at LIGNA HANNOVER. "Handwerk, Holz & mehr" will be in its third season in 2009. It is a show-within-a-show that profiles machinery, tools, materials and supplies for the skilled wood working and wood processing trades. Held in the odd-numbered years, it is the only tradeshow in this time slot in the whole of northern Germany to cover these themes so comprehensively. More than 50,000 of the 107,279 visitors who went to LIGNA 2007 did so in order to attend "Handwerk, Holz & mehr." About a third of this number came from outside of Germany.

One of the defining characteristics of "Handwerk, Holz & mehr" is its pioneering focus, a focus that embraces the overarching theme of the entire LIGNA tradeshow, namely efficiency. Lightweight construction, for example, is relevant to all aspects of efficiency. In the furniture industry, lightweight construction offers a whole host of key advantages over conventional "heavyweight" systems. It reduces raw material costs, makes production processes more energy-efficient and yields significant reductions in logistics costs. This year northern Germany's Lightweight Construction Association (igel) will be exhibiting at LIGNA HANNOVER for the first time - in Hall 17. The igel showcase is a group initiative comprising three sectors: teaching and research staff from the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences (HS-OWL), the Westfalen-Lippe Wood and Furniture Industry Associations (VHK-Herford), and the business community (interested industrial companies and trades-sector firms).

The new resource-efficiency technologies on show at all exhibition areas of the upcoming LIGNA HANNOVER have the potential to become drivers of capital investment. Visitors will find sustainable forestry solutions that conserve precious timber resources and ensure there is a reliable supply of wood for the future. They will also find woodworking machinery technologies that promote the efficient use of wood and yield significant energy and time savings. LIGNA HANNOVER 2009 comprises the following display categories:
