Logintern – Convincing Innovative Power

LogIntern now enhances the FachPack (packaging solutions) and PrintPack (package printing/packaging supplies production) exhibitions for the fifth time with the innovative power of packaging intralogistics. The exhibition trio lines up at the start in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 29 September to 1 October 2009 with a good 1,300 exhibitors and 34,000 visitors.

The display area at LogIntern grew appreciably in 2007. The 141 companies not only filled the new day-lit exhibition hall 4A, but a large part of the adjacent hall 4 as well.

A total of over 300 exhibitors also showed products relevant to LogIntern in other halls, which attracted great interest among the experts. Almost half of all visitors also gathered information at LogIntern. Besides the products from the exhibitors, this year's special show "LogIDSquare: Logistics – Transport – Packaging with RFID and more" offers a variety of solutions. The show is organized by the Institut für Distributions- und Handelslogistik (IDH) des Vereins zur Förderung innovativer Verfahren in der Logistik (VVL), Dortmund.

The international financial crisis puts the companies under massive pressure to save costs. According to a study involving 1, 400 companies, many German machinery manufacturers see mainly negative consequences for 2009 and to a lesser extent the opportunities created by the new challenges
(Dr. Wüpping Consulting, Bochum).

Logistics, which is constantly increasing its share of the total economy through globalization of markets and networking of companies, offers promising rationalization potentials. Although logistics is one of the largest cost categories, its capability is nowhere near exhausted. Effective internal and external logistics are the key to success and higher profits. Functioning and innovative logistics plays a decisive role especially for small and medium enterprises, as distinguishing features like quality, service and good prices are essential in competition.

Logistic trends: globalization, environment, security and innovation
The economic principle of global procurement, production and sales remains very important for industrial, trading and service companies on a cross-industry and cross-sector basis. The smooth flow of materials, goods and information and their setting up, organization and control demand innovative logistic services and concepts for solutions. Globalization therefore remains one of the main fields of application for future-orientated developments in logistics. 60 % of industrial firms already feel directly influenced by globalization and as many as 78 % expect to be within the next decade.

The trading companies interviewed share this view with 44 % at present and 65 % in future (Prof. Frank Straube, TU Berlin: Trends and Strategies in Logistics). Successful logistic system services can only be realized with streamlined, project-based solutions and consistent market orientation. In this case, for example, logistics IT offers opportunities for succeeding against the competition in shrinking and growing markets. Promising logistics information technologies like RFID, agent-based control and service-oriented architecture (SOA) remain permanent features of the optimization processes.

The priority in all considerations of long-term company orientation is on environmental and resource protection, growing security requirements and the accompanying technology innovations. It is decisive that environment-friendly and at the same time efficient logistics are established as export factor, but this also leads to long-term changes in logistics value creation. The environmental costs become particularly apparent through the focus on transport. The logistics share of the total costs of the German economy currently amounts to 7 to 8 % in industry and 15.9 % in trade. Transport costs cause the largest share of these with 40 %, followed by 30 % for logistics management costs. IT support accounts for 20 % and inventory costs 10 %. Due to rising energy, fuel and transport prices, it will be more difficult to cut costs in these areas in future (Straube).

59 % of German logistics managers think the logistics location Germany is competitive irrespective of the present economic development, whereas US and Chinese logistics managers rate Germany distinctly more favourably with 83 % (USA) and 60 % (China) (Straube). Here factors like geopolitical situation and confidence in the economic power play the decisive role. It is interesting to note that the managers rate their own country poorly by comparison.

The exhibitors, special show and forum at LogIntern 2009 also take up these issues to continue the discussion on targeted future concepts and technological innovations with the players from the economy and politics. LogIntern, which intentionally focuses on in-plant logistics, takes place from 29 September to 1 October 2009 and presents efficient conveying, handling and storage equipment, and the associated information technologies that help to utilize potential efficiency improvements and savings while maintaining full flexibility.
