Eco Lotus Elise sports car at Ecobuild 2009

An innovative 'eco' version of the Lotus Elise sports car will be on display at Ecobuild, courtesy of thermal walling specialists Tradical Hemcrete, exhibiting on stand 1849. The experimental model from Lotus features sustainable technology such as woven hemp body panels and seats, solar panels in the roof, naturally-dyed locally-sourced wool interior materials, and entirely water-based paintwork – an automotive industry first.

The car will be displayed on Tradical Hemcrete's stand at Ecobuild, where they will be displaying their Tradical Hemcrete cast in situ hemp-lime walling, often generically known as Hempcrete. It comprises a unique blend of specially prepared hemp shiv and a special lime based binder, which together form a bio-composite building material.

The hemp, which forms the key element in these products, is grown and harvested in the UK. This is claimed to lock up around 110kg of CO2 per m³ of wall and provides a good value material for low impact, sustainable and commercially viable construction.

Ecobuild, the world's biggest event dedicated to sustainable design, construction and the built environment, returns to Earls Court between 3 – 5 March 2009. Attracting in excess of 30,000 visitors, the exhibition will feature 800 suppliers of sustainable construction products and services, and over 500 of the most highly-regarded speakers will present more than 100 conference and seminar sessions.
