The First International Plastics Design Competition

The Alliance of Plastics Processors is now accepting applications for the International Plastics Design Competition, which will co-locate with NPE2009 on June 22-26 at Chicago's McCormick Place. The IPDC will be the first competition produced by the APP that is open to innovative products from any country in the world and for use in any end market.

Designers, processors, moldmakers, material suppliers, OEMs, and other parties involved in the development of an innovative product have until April 1,2009 to enter the product in the competition. Full information, including award categories, judging criteria, entry fees, and an application form, is available online at www.plasticsdesign.org or by clicking on the IPDC logo on the NPE2009 home page at www.npe.org.

The APP is a unit of The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI), which produces the triennial NPE event. The group is the successor to SPI's Structural Plastics Division and for 35 years has sponsored a design competition renowned in North America as a showplace for innovative plastic products. The IPDC will be the first such competition to be international in scope and open to the full range of applications, from automotive to packaging.

"Participants in the International Plastics Design Competition will benefit from the enormous exposure their achievements receive during NPE2009, whether or not their entries are selected for awards, " said Kevin Brady, chairman of the IPDC planning committee and U.S. sales director for L.K. Machinery Co. "Their most innovative accomplishments will be on display at a special IPDC pavilion in the West Hall of McCormick Place certain to be a prime attraction for the 75,000 industry professionals expected to attend NPE2009. With 2000 exhibiting companies, an extensive educational program, and multiple co-located events, NPE2009 will provide an outstanding opportunity to interact with processors, designers, toolmakers, material and equipment suppliers, and OEMs."

IPDC Awards will be presented at a gala ceremony during NPE2009, and winning companies will be invited to a breakfast with members of the press from many industries. Awards Will Reflect Plastics Versatility and Cutting-Edge Developments

An expert panel of judges will examine product entries immediately after the April 1 deadline and conclude their deliberations at NPE2009. Awards will be presented in a number of categories: Overall achievement, including best-of-competition, multi-component system, single part, judges' choice, and people's choice (as voted for by NPE attendees).

End-use market, which may include awards in a range of sectors such as appliances, medical devices, or packaging. Sustainability, including three awards for products that lead to improvements in energy efficiency, waste reduction, pollution reduction, or water conservation.

Emerging technology, being an award for a product incorporating a key developing technology such as bio-based materials, biodegradability, or nanotechnology.

The NPE2009 international plastics exposition will take place June 22-26, 2009 at Chicago's McCormick Place. A total of 2, 000 companies will exhibit on 1,000,000 sq.ft. (93, 000 sq.m), more than a third of them coming directly from outside the U.S. About 75,000 plastics professionals from 120 countries are expected to register. The event is produced by the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI).

Co-located with NPE2009 will be the Society of Plastics Engineers' ANTEC 2009, the world's largest plastics technical conference; Gardner Publications' MoldMaking Expo 2009 show and conference; and the Executive Summit of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology.
