Reed Tuckson, MD, FACP, executive vice president and chief of medical affairs at UnitedHealth Group, will deliver the Luncheon General Session Keynote on December 10, 2008, at the 7th Annual LifeScience Alley Conference & Expo. Dr. Tuckson, who has held prestigious roles in health care policy and management, will deliver his address entitled "Innovations in Health Care: Opportunities, Challenges and Accountabilities" to an expected 1,500 life science professionals at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Dr. Tuckson's address will focus on the need for greater innovation in key areas of health care and the obstacles the current health system presents to innovators in academia and industry. He will also examine the challenges of bringing innovations to market, and the ever-increasing need for more funding and more affordable access to care. As an expert in health care administration and delivery, Dr. Tuckson has amassed significant experience regarding the local and national health care delivery system. He has previously served as the commissioner of public health for the District of Columbia, and as senior vice president of professional standards for the American Medical Association (AMA). In addition, he has held positions on cabinet-level advisory committees focused on national health care topics such as health reform, children's health, and radiation testing.

As an executive at UnitedHealth Group, Dr. Tuckson is responsible for working with all of the company's business units to improve the quality and efficiency of health services. "As a thought leader for locally-based UnitedHealth Group, and as a diligent steward for health care at the national level, Dr. Reed Tuckson is in a unique position to offer high-level insights into the present and future of health care in our region and country."

Dr. Tuckson is an active member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and currently serves as chair of the Secretary of Health and Human Services' Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and former chair of its Quality Chasm Summit Committee. Joining Dr. Tuckson as keynote speakers will be Paul H. Keckley, Ph.D., and Peter Agre, MD, Nobel Laureate. Leading life science organizations such as 3M, Boston Scientific, Cargill, the FDA, Mayo Clinic, Medtronic, the University of Minnesota, and many others will be participating, in addition to delegations from major Canadian research clusters in Alberta and Manitoba.
