Itu Telecom Asia 2008

Itu Telecom Asia 2008, the regional ICT showcase, is set for Bangkok, Thailand from 2 to 5 September. The first such event to be hosted by Thailand, Asia 2008 will promote information and communication technologies (ICT) both globally and within the Asia-Pacific region.

"New Generation, New Values" the theme for Itu Telecom Asia 2008 sets the stage for both the Exhibition and the Forum. The Exhibition showcases a comprehensive range of ICT-related products and services, reflecting the ever extending reach of industry. Parallel to individual stands, a number of initiatives are underway to showcase national competitive advantages. Pavilions registered thus far include: China, France, Japan, Korea, Russia, Thailand and USA.

Itu Telecom Asia 2008 will be held at the modern IMPACT Challenger Centre in Bangkok. As ASIA 2008 coincides with the dates for Bangkok International ICT Expo that has been organized for the last four years by Thailand's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), the entire central hall of the IMPACT Challenger venue is dedicated to showcasing the ICT industry in Thailand.

"Thailand is very supportive of this year's event and has organized an impressive Pavilion that firmly establishes Thailand as an ICT hub, " said ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun Touré. "The location is ideal because of its strategic and geographic situation in the Asia-Pacific region, noting the fast-growing markets in China and India and the huge potential of the rest of the region. At the same time, more developed markets in neighbouring countries continue to embrace cutting edge information and communication technologies."

The Forum provides a highly interactive environment for discussions among all stakeholders, including Ministers and CEOs to focus on the theme of Itu Telecom Asia 2008 — the new users of today's connected generation and the flexible and sustainable new business models for growing the ICT sector.

The three tracks that guide the four days of the Forum sessions are Meeting the Needs of Society; The Connected Generation; New Business Generations: New Value.

ITU TELECOM events stand out from other ICT events in their ability to draw key decision-makers for high-level networking and negotiations. Ministers and CEOs commit their participation as they know they are able to meet numerous key players under one roof within a short period. The VIP Programme delivers such benefits by facilitating networking with specially designed activities and social events, like power lunches where key issues are discussed over lunch by leading stakeholders.

ITU TELECOM events were launched more than 37 years ago with WORLD TELECOM first being held in Geneva in 1971. The regional events, which include ITU TELECOM ASIA, were introduced in 1985 in order to address the more specific concerns of the individual regions. Previous Asian regional events have taken place in Singapore (1985, 1989, 1993, 1997); Hong Kong (2000, 2002); and Busan (2004).

The ITU TELECOM ASIA 2004 event brought together 224 exhibitors from 24 countries, and attracted more than 24 465 participants, including over 556 VIPs and 787 Forum participants from 83 countries. The event was covered by 482 media representatives from 186 organisations and 18 countries.
