Natural & Organic Products Expo.

The mystique of the magical herb ginseng has enthralled mankind for generations. Best known as an aphrodisiac and administered by Oriental doctors to restore energy and vitality, it is only recently, that the world has woken up to its unique medicinal properties, particularly in the treatment of AIDS and cancer. The versatile use of ginseng was effectively showcased by a large number of small and medium Korean entrepreneurs at the Korea pavilion of the Middle East Natural & Organic Products Expo held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 10-12.

The Middle East Natural Products and Organic Expo also saw Dr. Young Chul Lee, Head Ginseng Research Group, Korea Food Res. Inst., delivering a lecture outlining the multi-faceted use of the ginseng. The lecture was a part of the Korean Food conference held on the sidelines of the Organic Expo and initiated by the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation.

Derived from the Greek word "Panax" meaning that it has the 'power to cure all', Dr. Lee underscored the importance of ginseng in boosting the immune system to protect the body from fatal diseases like Aids and Cancer. Most importantly, ginseng is an anti-stress agent that maintains homeostasis in the body, thereby increasing resistance to stress. "Containing the G-Rh2, polysaccharide component, the Korean ginseng can also be used as an antidote to cancer and help in maintaining blood glucose levels, " he explained.

Dr. Lee also quoted clinical studies that had been conducted to prove the power of ginseng to improve the treatment of AIDS. "Concurrent administration of the Korean ginseng with anti-retroviral drugs expedited recovery in patients, " he said. "Also consumption of Korean red ginseng over a long period of time showed a significant deletion of the AIDS-related gene (nef)."

Another already established positive impact of the ginseng is its ability to reverse symptoms of male impotence and expedite oxidation and slower the ageing process in the body.

The Korea Ginseng Corp, also present at the Expo, showcased the different varieties of ginseng available -Heaven (human-shaped with 1-3 legs), Earth (human shaped with 1-3 legs), Good (human shaped with less developed legs) and Cut (portion of the red ginseng body). The Korea Ginseng Corp makes these four varieties of ginseng available in the form of powder that can be used in tea and cooking, capsules and tablets for swallowing, in the form of tonic, jellies, chocolates and candies.
