Latest Accelerate State of DevOps Report demonstrates growing performance improvements Cambridge UK, Thursday 22 August 2019 - The 2019 Accelerate State of DevOps Report, published today, highlights that DevOps is enabling continued high performance and technology transformation. The Accelerate State of DevOps Report is the largest and longest running independent research of its kind, whether in academia or industry, and Redgate is a proud sponsor of the report. The 2019 Accelerate report contains learnings from more than 31, 000 survey responses over six years of research on the impact of IT practices on organizational performance. The Accelerate research is performed by the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) group, which was acquired by Google in December 2018. Key findings in this year’s Accelerate report include that the industry continues to improve: this year, 20% of all teams studied by the report are classified as “elite” performers, a massive leap from 7% of teams last year. The study also finds that persistence at working to improve DevOps practices continues to pay off for organizations in terms of business metrics. The highest performers in the study are twice as likely to meet or exceed their organization’s goals on measures including profitability, productivity, and customer satisfaction. This year’s Accelerate report has critical findings in a key area of interest for data professionals and their leadership: change approval practices. The Accelerate 2019 report finds that formal change management processes requiring approval from an external Change Approval Board (CAB) or a senior level employee negatively impact software delivery performance. The research has also shown that formal approval processes are not associated with lower change failure rates. Instead, Accelerate finds that a heavier change approval process results in larger batches of changes being deployed at once, which is associated with higher change failure rates. “Over the past six years the Accelerate State of DevOps Report has become the benchmark for good practice in DevOps, demonstrating the business benefits adoption delivers, ” says Kendra Little, DevOps Advocate, Redgate Software. “In 2018 it highlighted the importance of the database to DevOps success, and in 2019 has invaluable advice on the impact of good culture, the cloud, creating communities and change approvals on improved organizational performance.” The findings of the Accelerate report, along with broader shifts in the role of IT as a key driver of value generation inside an organization, signal the need for a major shift in the role of data professionals. To improve performance of the software delivery process and to increase the stability of production systems, specialists such as database professionals can no longer act as ‘gatekeepers’ for the production environment. Instead, these specialist roles need to transform into consultants and advisors, who influence development teams early in the software development lifecycle, and build communities at all levels.
