Smithfield Foods Takes Major Step in Cloud Journey by Moving SAP Workloads to Virtustream Enterprise Cloud

Virtustream helps food giant achieve multi-cloud strategy to manage mission-critical applications, saving $3M in total IT costs

London, UK – 24th January 2019 - Virtustream, the enterprise-class cloud company and a Dell Technologies business, today announced that Smithfield Foods, Inc., a $15 billion global food company, has successfully completed the migration of all SAP systems onto a single, unified S4/HANA SAP platform on Virtustream Enterprise Cloud.

According to research from Forrester, 86 percent of organisations describe their cloud strategy as multi-cloud today. While 58 percent of those organisations are looking for improved performance with their multi-cloud strategy, 52 percent are looking to achieve cost savings. By consolidating their SAP applications onto Virtustream Enterprise Cloud, Smithfield is realising both goals, while also freeimng up resources for internal teams to focus on innovation.

“To accomplish the next phase of our digital transformation journey, we needed a provider that had deep expertise and understood our specific requirements for mission-critical applications and multi-cloud support, ” said Julia Anderson, Global CIO, Smithfield Foods. “In selecting Virtustream, we have already seen incredible results such as reducing our IT costs by consolidating SOWs and right-sizing our VMs to future proof our legacy infrastructure.”

Through meticulous preparation, Smithfield and Virtustream developed a strategy, which resulted in the “One SAP” project, launched in July 2018 to move all of Smithfield’s operations for SAP to Virtustream Enterprise Cloud. With Virtustream, Smithfield reduces consumption of their SAP environment by taking advantage of Virtustream Enterprise Cloud’s dynamic, scalable, on-demand resources, which allow Smithfield the flexibility to pay for only what they consume. Smithfield is projected to save an estimated $3M in IT costs over the next three years.

“Smithfield Foods’s decision to partner with Virtustream as part of its multi-cloud strategy leverages our core strengths in running mission-critical applications in the cloud, ” said Rory Read, president and CEO, Virtustream. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to grow with Smithfield, support their efforts as leaders in innovation and serve as the trusted partner they require to confidently move a multi-billion dollar business to the cloud.”
