Renowned author Gene Kim hosts DevOps webinar for database developer audience

Cambridge UK, Tuesday 18 September 2018 – The acclaimed DevOps author and researcher Gene Kim is to host a webinar for users of Redgate’s database development tools on 25 September. The webinar will talk about the key findings in the 2018 Accelerate State of DevOps Report from DORA which, for the first time, called out database development as a key technical practice which can drive high performance in DevOps.

Gene Kim will be joined by Steve Jones, editor of SQLServerCentral.com, the community of 1.9 million DBAs, developers and SQL Server users. Together, they’ll look at the key findings in the DORA Report and investigate the growing importance of the database in successful DevOps.

The result of over five years of research, with over 30, 000 data points, the Report seeks to understand high performance in the context of software development and identify the factors that can predict it.

The inclusion of the database this year was because changes to databases are often a major source of risk and delay when performing deployments. The authors of the report, which included Jez Humble and Nicole Forsgren as well as Gene Kim, wanted to investigate which database-related practices help when implementing continuous delivery to improve both software delivery performance and availability.

Their conclusion, that integrating database work into the software development process positively contributes to continuous delivery, strikes a chord with some earlier research from Redgate. The 2018 Database DevOps Survey showed that 76% of application developers are now also responsible for developing databases, and 75% of them build database deployment scripts.

This change has been prompted by the faster speed at which features can be released using DevOps. Those front-end features often need an update to the database at the back end as well, so it makes sense for the two activities to be aligned as part of the same process.

The webinar is a unique opportunity to see an acknowledged expert in DevOps and a renowned figure from the SQL Server world come together to discuss the common ground that now exists between application and database development rather than the differences.

An award-winning CTO, researcher and author, Gene Kim was founder and CTO of Tripwire for 13 years and is co-author of the books ‘The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win’, ‘The DevOps Handbook’, and the Accelerate State of DevOps Report.

Steve Jones is a Microsoft SQL Server MVP and has been an advocate for SQL Server since version 4.2 on OS/2. After working as a DBA and developer for a variety of companies, he co-founded SQLServerCentral.com in 2001 and has been the full-time editor since 2004.

The one hour webinar is being hosted by Redgate at 17.00 BST/12 noon ET/9am PT on Tuesday, 25 September, and attendees can find out more on the Redgate website or register online.
