In Seven Months, Seven Mobile Operators Turn to Openwave Mobility to Manage Encrypted Mobile Data

100 million additional subscribers come as Google’s QUIC encryption protocol increases by 200%

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS AND REDWOOD CITY, CA 27 February 2017 – Openwave Mobility, a software innovator enabling operators to manage and monetize encrypted mobile data today announced that seven mobile operators have deployed its optimization technology, Secure Traffic Manager (STM), in the past seven months. This crowns a remarkable half-year for Openwave Mobility whose solutions have been selected by tier 1 operators in North and South America, Asia and the Middle East. These operators have a combined footprint of over 100 million subscribers. In addition, an ICT solutions provider offering services to mobile operators globally will deploy the technology in the United States.

These global deployments come at a time when OTT encryption on operator networks is rising significantly. In some parts of the world 60% of network data is encrypted and this could reach 80% before the end of 2017. STM is the only product in the industry capable of optimizing Google’s ubiquitous internet traffic protocol QUIC along with TCP and HTTPS.

Having rolled out QUIC in 2015, Google introduced new protocols for the YouTube app in July 2016. Within just four months, Openwave Mobility detected a 200% increase in QUIC encrypted data travelling on operator networks. What’s more, Facebook has started introducing its own encryption protocol, and Instagram has followed suit.

Indranil Chatterjee, SVP Product & Sales explains: “OTT encryption will only continue to rise. Operators need the right technology to optimize, analyze and manage this “dark data”. Our solution improves video start time and reduces video stalling especially during network congestion leading to improved user experience and lower churn. Our research in US and EMEA has shown that poor mobile internet quality is now an even greater source of frustration than dropped calls and users will drop a streaming video in 6 seconds if they experience stalling.”

Chatterjee concluded: “We’re delighted and honored to welcome seven new mobile operators to our family of global customers. Its further testimony to our innovative spirit. Our NFV enabled STM solution is designed to deliver outstanding QoE. Our patented algorithms, based on human-testing of tens of thousands of streaming videos on multiple devices, are known to handle current protocols and new encryption technology still out on the horizon.”
