UPC and Sling Media Introduce the Slingbox in the Netherlands

UPC Broadband and Sling Media have announced a trial to introduce the Slingbox for UPC Digital TV customers in the Netherlands. The announcement was made at IBC 2007 in Amsterdam, Europe's largest tradeshow for broadband and broadcast technologies.

The Slingbox allows UPC Digital TV customers to remotely control their digital Mediabox and watch or record their TV channels and programs using a broadband internet connection. UPC already offers its digital TV customers an extensive range of digital channels, Video on Demand, HDTV and the UPC Digital Video Recorder. With the Slingbox functionality, UPC further expands the digital TV experience for its customers.

The Slingbox is an intelligent device that transmits the UPC Digital TV-signal to a desktop or laptop computer at home or on the road using any broadband connection. For instance, UPC Digital TV and the UPC DVR combined with the Slingbox enables UPC customers in The Netherlands to watch their favourite sports match on a remote laptop computer, or schedule the recording of the latest episode of their favourite soap on a DVR while waiting for a train.

Diederik Karsten, CEO of UPC Netherlands, comments: "The Slingbox brings a new digital TV experience to our customers. They can view and record their favourite programs remotely by using a broadband internet connection. We believe the Slingbox will certainly enhance UPC's leadership position on the Digital TV market."

Stuart Collingwood, vice president of Europe for Sling Media, says: "We are thrilled to make the Slingbox available with the help of UPC to deliver a truly enhanced digital TV experience to customers in the Netherlands. Now UPC customers can watch their favourite UPC digital programs on their laptop or desktop computer. The UPC Digital TV experience is now better than ever before with the addition of Slingbox."
