HELIOS Offers Free Simplified Linux Distribution for Playstation 3

HELIOS Software has released a free download of its modified Yellow Dog Linux distribution optimized to use Sony's PlayStation 3 as a test-drive server. HELIOS Software has prepared a customized version of Yellow Dog Linux for the purpose of providing a lightweight, low overhead server environment on the Playstation 3, while offering an exciting test-drive platform for its file, print, PDF and image server software.

The HELIOS simplified YDL distribution comes on a CD disk image that installs in less than 6 minutes, and provides a high performance Linux server OS complete with DHCP network settings, support for Java 1.5 and AppleTalk enhanced kernel.

The Playstation 3 uses a 64-bit Cell processor which runs at 3.2 GHz, is PowerPC compatible with 256 MB of main memory, and has performance comparable to a G5 single CPU. The Playstation 3 comes with the NVIDIA RSX Graphics Processing Unit, has a 60 GB 2.5" swappable serial ATA disk and offers WLAN and Gigabit Ethernet for network connectivity. Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 is binary compatible with its release for the former Apple PowerPC product line and concurrent support for the Mercury Cell products and IBM Cell and pSeries servers.
