Digital Freedom Campaign Applauds BitTorrent

The Digital Freedom Campaign applauds the announcement from BitTorrent as a major step in the right direction for the future of digital entertainment technologies. The BitTorrent Entertainment Network will connect content owners and digital technologies so that consumers can get what they want - their favorite content in digital format.

The agreement is an important sign that big content companies like MGM, Viacom, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and 20th Century Fox are finally starting to recognize that the Internet and digital technologies do not pose a threat, but rather an unprecedented opportunity to distribute their works, reach new audiences and realize entirely new streams of revenue.

BitTorrent has demonstrated that what consumers want and need most is the ability to enjoy their legally acquired content as they wish and that they can do so legitimately. The advent of this and similar services is a positive development - if successful, they will open new revenue streams and drive the unauthorized sites out of business. However, their success will depend entirely on their ability to meet consumers' reasonable needs and expectations. We urge the motion picture studios to make their content available to these services in a manner that supports the portability that today's digital consumers demand.
