TDK and Rimage Introduce Thermal Printable Blu-ray Discs

TDK and Rimage Corporation has announced the introduction of the world's first thermal printable BD-R Blu-ray Disc media. Using a DVD/CD compatible thermal printer from Rimage, users can print custom text and graphics directly on each disc's label-side surface. TDK has partnered with Rimage to optimize its printable surface BD-R media for use with Rimage's world renowned line of thermal BD-R disc publishing solutions.

TDK will offer single-layer BD-R (write-once type) Thermal Printable Blu-ray Discs featuring 25GB capacity in the third quarter of 2006. In the third quarter, TDK will also introduce dual-layer BD-R 50GB Thermal Printable Blu-ray Discs. Both versions will offer the highest compatibility with Blu-ray drives and recorders/players. The Thermal Printable Blu-ray Discs will be available from TDK with pricing soon to be announced.

TDK Thermal Printable BD-R has been optimized for use with Rimage's range of thermal BD-R disc publishing and duplication products by utilizing Rimage's Everest thermal retransfer technology which enables users to create permanent, colorful, high-resolution prints bonded directly to the surface of thermal printable media. TDK BD-R media has true WORM (Write Once Read Many) characteristics, making it ideal for backup use in mission critical applications such as medical imaging, digital photography and financial record archiving and publishing.

The media is coated with a special thermal-optimized surface that not only delivers extremely bright, high-resolution full color images and text, but also prevents warping - a potential problem with standard thermal surfaces. The printable surface extends from the outside edge of the media all the way to the center hub for a fully produced, highly professional appearance. Wide sputtering and the absence of a stacking ring make printing quality consistent across the entire disc surface, from edge to edge.

Hard coating technology pioneered by TDK is part of the Blu-ray specification, but only TDK Blu-ray Discs have DURABIS 2, the industry's most advanced hard coating technology. DURABIS 2 increases the scratch resistance of Blu-ray Disc media by a factor of 100, as demonstrated in rigorous testing. DURABIS 2 also resists fingerprints to help eliminate errors caused by recording surface smudges.
