Siemens' SURPASS Smart Home is Released

Siemens' SURPASS Smart Home gives carriers the chance to offer their customers a plethora of new services. Together with partner companies, they can provide entertainment offerings such as interactive TV, for example. A further possibility is to supply security services that alert home owners automatically if a water pipe bursts or a window breaks, say. Video conferences between patient and doctor are yet another option.

The latest addition to the SURPASS Smart Home family goes by the name of Easy Content Access, which lets users access music files, pictures and videos that are stored at home even while they are on the move. The process could not be simpler: Users simply log into a web portal with a mobile phone, PDA or PC and choose the files they want from the list displayed. The system verifies connection bandwidth and adapts the file size fully automatically. That means no annoyingly long waits even when using narrow-band GPRS links – even though the original files only have to be stored once in top quality on the home system.

Easy Content Access stores data on the home router, although set-top boxes or home PCs can just as well be used as content servers. To keep the system secure and protect privacy, users do not dial in directly but instead go via a proxy server run by the carrier.
