LSI Logic Ships Industry's First PCI Express-to-SAS Controllers

LSI Logic Corporation has announced the industry's first production shipments of PCI Express-to-SAS controller ICs. Providing unprecedented bandwidth and scalability for server Direct Attached Storage (DAS) and external storage systems environments, the SAS ICs meet the increasing bandwidth and flexibility demands of next-generation processor and memory subsystems.

The new 4- and 8-port controller ICs use the Fusion-MPT (Message Passing Technology) architecture to speed OEM design and deployment processes to provide a time-to-market advantage that makes them suited for use in blade servers. These new products support the scalability requirements of blade server environments and high-end server and storage subsystems.

Both the 4-port LSISAS1064E and 8-port LSISAS1068E support 8 PCI Express lanes at 2.5Gb/s, for an aggregate bandwidth of up to 2GB/s. The controller ICs can be configured as x8, x4, and x1 PCI Express devices, with the ability to auto-negotiate among those link widths. In addition, the family supports Integrated RAID functionality for systems requiring redundancy and high-availability, but not needing a full featured RAID implementation.
