Furukawa America Unveils FITEL S122 Fusion Splicer

Furukawa America Inc. will introduce its new low-profile, high-precision fusion splicer designed for virtually every splicing environment at OFC/NFOEC in Anaheim, CA, Mar. 7-9.

Developed by The Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd., the S122 fusion splicer leverages FITEL's proven T-shaped, hand-held splicer design along with its high-end ribbon splicing technology to achieve both capabilities in a smaller, lighter unit. The machine weighs 2.3 pounds with battery and measures 1.85 inches high at the keypad compared to 2.8 pounds and 2.8 inches high in preceding models.

The S122 also works with a wider range of fiber types (MM, SM, DSF, NZDS, and fiber ribbon up to 4). In addition, its LCD screen is 40-percent larger - 3.5 inches versus 2.5 in previous models - which improves viewing in all light conditions.

A new graphical interface and intuitive function keys allow for virtually error proof operation. The operator sees X and Y fiber views simultaneously on screen. The machine delivers a 13-second splice time for single fiber and 15-second splice time for 4-fiber ribbon. Heat time is 37- to 45- seconds (single versus ribbon sleeve) resulting in a total splice/heat time of 60 seconds or less. Three-sided heating facilitates the 50-percent reduction in heat time compared to previous models.

FITEL S122 fusion splicer performance includes:

* Average insertion loss: MM: 0.03dB, SM: 0.05dB, DSF/NDZS: 0.08dB
* Battery Capacity: 90 splices or 40 splices with heat shrink protection
* Dimensions: 140Wx189Dx73H(mm)
