SigmaTel Unveils 8- and 10-Channel High Definition Audio Codecs

SigmaTel, Inc. has launched its new family of 8- and 10-channel High Definition Audio Codecs, the STAC9271/9272/9273/9274 and the STAC9227/9228/9229/9230. The new theater quality audio codec solutions enable systems to simultaneously play 7.1-channel audio and VoIP or a second stereo audio stream. The new codecs have a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) up to 105dB and support advanced technologies, including digital microphone interface and ADAT Optical "lightpipe". The new 8- and 10-channel Theater Quality Audio Codecs provide OEMs and ODMs with the ability to develop systems that offer industry leading audio fidelity and performance and advanced audio technology.

The SigmaTel STAC9227/28/29/30 and the STAC9271/72/73/74 support Dolby Master Studio and bring Dolby audio presentation capabilities to PC platforms. The new SigmaTel HD audio codecs support leading industry initiatives, including the Intel High Definition Audio interface, improved voice input performance, the Microsoft Unified Audio Architecture (UAA), and the new Microsoft Windows logo program requirements.

The 10-channel STAC9271/72/73/74 codecs are targeted at high-end and entertainment PCs and provide 7.1-channel audio with simultaneous real-time communication (RTC) and quad digital microphone interfaces for significantly higher quality voice input supporting applications like VoIP and speech recognition. The SigmaTel STAC9227/28/29/30 codecs are eight-channel HD audio codecs targeted at desktop and notebook PCs providing support for 7.1-channel audio or 5.1-channel audio with simultaneous RTC, as well as quad digital microphone interfaces. Both the STAC9227/28/29/30 and the STAC9271/72/73/74 provide three stereo ADCs with 24-bit resolution, integrated headphone amps, and Universal Jacks functionality for jack retasking.

SigmaTel's new HD audio codecs also support some software solutions, including:

-- Microphone Beam forming, Acoustic Echo Cancellation and Noise Suppression from Knowles
-- SigmaTel Kernel Processing Interface (SKPI)
-- Dynamics Processing SKPI plug-in
-- 12 band parametric equalizer SKPI plug-in
