Atkins-designed gate lines enable more seamless journeys between Heathrow and Paddington

- 26 February 2019

New gate lines designed and engineered by SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business have been installed at Heathrow and Paddington Station to help improve the passenger journey. These gates enable contactless bank cards, mobile devices and Oyster cards to be accepted as payment for the Heathrow Express, the fastest route between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport. These payment options offer a quick and easy way to travel for the 17, 000 passengers that use Heathrow Express each day, integrating it with paying for travel across all of the capital’s Tube, rail and bus network.

Atkins was commissioned by Heathrow Airport in 2017 as Lead Designer responsible for designing new gates lines at all three stations within the airport terminals and at Paddington Station. This also included the redesign and modernisation of the legacy ticket offices. Working with Delivery Integrator Mace, Atkins completed the design and engineering, including the analysis of passenger flow and vehicle tracking, and listed build consents for Paddington Station.

Phil Tarrant, Project Director at SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business, said: “This was a full multi-disciplinary project involving specialist designers from across our business. The coordination of these disciplines, plus the large number of stakeholders, make me especially proud that we’ve successfully implemented this project and that it’s been well received by passengers.”

Les Freer, Director of Heathrow Express, said: “Speed is everything to Heathrow Express customers so the introduction of Contactless and Oyster offers quick and easy ways to pay for your journey.”

This is one of several transformational projects Atkins is working on for Heathrow Airport, including the full-scale roll out of new facial recognition biometric services later this year.
